B. Providing Input/Engaging Learners: (20mins)

  1. After the review, I will introduce how to ask/say the date and the day of the week by using an overhead. I will pronounce the days of the week as well as the seasons, and they will repeat.
  2. I will also focus on how the date is written in Spanish in comparison to how the date is written in English.
  3. For practice, students will be put into groups of three/four and they must guess each other’s birthday. As a guide, their classmates will use antes or después until they guess correctly. The students will guess the month first and then the date.
  4. Using the previous questions, which use the conjugation of the verb ¨ser¨, I will introduce them to the present tense of the verb ¨ser¨.
  5. I will tell students, Yo soy de _____. ¿Y tú? Eres de ______. I will continue this with other students to demonstrate the use of all the forms of ser.
  6. Next, I will explain the conjugations of ¨ser¨ using an overhead. I will also explain how to make a sentence negative.
  7. I will write 5 or 6 sentences using ser on the board, leaving a blank in the place of the verbs. Students complete each sentence with the appropriate form of ser. Volunteers will come to the board and fill in the correct verb forms.
  8. Using the sentences illustrated on the board, I will also give a brief overview of the use of punctuation and accent/tildes. C. Guided Participation: (10 mins)
  9. Students complete Exercises 32 and 33 on pages 24 and 25 of their textbooks. When the exercises have been completed we will discuss them as a class. D. Extension: (10 mins)
  10. Students will write 5 sentences about themselves. Four of the sentences should be true and one should be false. The students are then divided into groups of four or five. Students read their sentences and other students in the group take turns trying to identify the lie. E. Closure:
  11. We will review what was discussed by asking questions, engaging in a small conversation with the students. For example,¿Qué fecha es hoy? ¿Qué día es hoy? ¿Qué hora es?, etc.
  12. I will explain how this lesson will be related to the upcoming lesson in which they will use the verb ¨ser¨ to describe someone/something (¿Cómo es?).
  13. Homework: pgs. 32 and 33, exercises 2-5. Study for quiz.
