ICA-Photosynthesis
1. Draw the photosynthesis electron transport chain. Label the (a) photosystem II,
(b) plastoquinone, (c) cytochrome complex, (d) plastocyanin, (e) photosystem I,
(f) ferrodoxin, (g) NADP reductase, (h) ATP synthase, and the flow of electrons.
Label where water is oxidized to O2, and identify both linear and cyclic flow.
2. What is the difference between oxidative phosphorylation, substrate-level
phosphorylation, and photophosphorylation? Do plants do oxidative and
substrate-level phosphorylation, and if so, where?
- Oxidative phosphorylation:
oATP production: via electron transport chain (ETC) powered by proton gradient
(from redox reactions)
oWhere?: mitochondria
oWhen?: cellular respiration
- Substrate-level phosphorylation: ATP production via phosphorylating ADP (adding
phosphate to ADP)
- Photophosphorylation:
oATP production: via electron transport chain (ETC) powered by proton gradient
(from light energy)
oWhere?: chloroplast
oWhen?: photosynthesis
3. Draw a chloroplast below, labeling the (a) outer membrane, (b) inner
membrane, (c) thylakoid membrane, (d) thylakoid lumen, and (e) stroma. Also
draw a mitochondria, labeling the (a) intermembrane space and the (b) matrix.
After, draw arrows in the direction of hydrogen pumping in the electron
transport chain, then the direction of hydrogen flow through ATP synthase and
chemiosmosis.

4. How many times does the Calvin cycle have to turn to produce 1 molecule of glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate? How many times does the CC have to turn to produce 1 molecule of glucose?

  • To produce 1 molecule of glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate: 3 turns
  • To produce 1 molecule of glucose: 6 turns
