TERM 1
DEFINITION 1 I am about to read you a persuasive speech, on a topic most of you would disagree upon. That it feels like I am out to attack the teachers of this wonderful nation, but in reality I am speaking the mind of the unheard, the kids who sit in the back of the classroom. I am here to persuade you on teachers, and how to make their student teacher relationships better. In a recent survey taken by students themselves only 48% of students think their teachers care about them. And sadly only only 45% of students think teachers care if they are absent from school according to teaching.monster.com In these findings I think teachers can and should work harder to ensure that students know they are important, valued, missed, and cared for. TERM 2
DEFINITION 2 One student who faced these kinds of hardships told a researcher that the greatest thing a teacher can do is to care and to understand. Because if not, he said, the kid will say, Oh, theyre giving up on me, so I might as well give up on myself. Researchers have found four ways a teacher can show they care. The first one being getting to know the student genuinely, and getting to know the life they live on a daily basis. TERM 3
DEFINITION 3 This especially goes for if the student comes from a culture, or socio background. Numerous studies have showed that cultural misunderstanding can affect students and their learning. So take time out of your day, maybe do an interest inventory on all the students, or even visit their homes/neighborhood. That is one thing that can go a long way with some of the students, and can help you touch on a deeper base with the students. TERM 4
DEFINITION 4 Another thing you can do is actively listen to your students, actively listening to them is a meaning of find a greater meaning behind what they are saying. And then after you find what they are meant to say doing check ins with the student on a regular basis could go a long way. We understand as a student body that it's not a teacher's job to do check up with the students, but some student really do need that extra check to go a long way. Having the chaos in the classroom, having that extra time set aside to do a check up with a student can really help a student voice what they have yet to understand in the class. TERM 5
DEFINITION 5 The next thing recommended to do is to always ask for feedback, whether it be on subject, or just random. By having this time to write down what concerns and what confuses the student, and then you read those, it shows the student that you truly do value their opinion. Having something like a forum to provide constructive and timely feedback -- criticism or praise -- through taking social media to your advantage like a group Google Doc, Twitter, helps you improve your teaching. It also helps students, emphasize their feelings and it shows that learning is about partnership and working together.
TERM 6
DEFINITION 6 Another study showed reflecting on your own experience as a teacher with caring showed that sometimes unconsciously we care for people how we were cared for as a child. A study was done with a girl who had four teachers, and it revealed she was cared for in four different ways, by each of those teachers. And each of those findings they found that they treated the child to their assumptions on how they were cared for. Reflecting on how you were cared for or not cared for as a child will give you a type of insight, or foreshadowing into the kind of care you might be giving to your students, and allow you to adjust your care to fit their needs. TERM 7
DEFINITION 7 As teachers I do not think you realize how big a gesture even the tiniest gesture about showing a student you care could make a great impact on their life. In conclusion I would like to tell you my story about the very caring teacher, who I have come to know as my friend, more than a teacher, She still pushes me to do my best but always has open ears, and a kind heart towards anyone. Her names Mrs.Robaska, it was my freshman year, and I was placed in her class for my terrible grades, TERM 8
DEFINITION 8 She used each of these techniques and still does to this day, but she did not just do it to get information she did this because she truly cares about my education, and she made you feel like it. She also pushed us to succeed each and everyday. I hope one day all teachers can act like this or show some compassion towards their student as well. Thank you.
