TERM 5

DEFINITION 5

My mom took me to a salon who would donate the hair to

Locksof Love. They put my hair in two ponytails, cut the hair,

and then bagged it up to bemailed out.A little over a year

ago, I got my hair cut and decided since it was longenough

Today, I will tell you how Alopecia affects children and how supporting theLocks of Love foundation will help these children.First, I will explain the need for Locks of Love and how they help childrensuffering from medical conditions causing hair loss.Next, I will propose a solution to help these children who suffer from hairloss medical conditions. Then, I will help you visualize what will happen if action is not taken soon. TERM 7

DEFINITION 7 Finally, I will tell you exactly what you can do to help these children. In the US, there are 5.2 million cases of Alopecia and 2,200 with brain tumorsin children who suffer from hair loss and lose their sense of self worth.Alopecia affects both sexes equally and there in no known cause or cure. There are 4 different types of Alopecia. Alopecia Areata Ophiasis - loss in bands along the scalp margin.Alopecia Areata Sisaipho - loss of all scalp hair except along the scalpmargins. TERM 8

DEFINITION 8 Alopecia Totalis - loss of all scalp hair.Alopecia Universalis - loss of all scalp and body hair.Emma is just one of millions of kids who lost her hair due to Alopecia. With living with the disease herself, she wanted to be able to help otherchildren who were just like her.Emma started collecting ponytails to donate to Locks of Love. Some of these would go to her own wigs and others would go to wigs for kidswith the same situation. TERM 9

DEFINITION 9 It started out slow with just her friends donating their ponytails to her, butthen grew as those friends would pass on the information to their friends andso on.People would send her ponytails from all over the US and Canada. She would get letters from people who would say that she inspired them. Her story spread around and in total she collected 987 ponytails to donate toLocks of Love. TERM 10

DEFINITION 10 I have learned that you cant control what happens to you in your life; youcan only control how you handle it. So when people ask me what my plansfor the future are, I will say that, I will be using my story to touch as manylives as possible. Wherever that sends me, Im fine with it. I just want to helppeople and remind them that true beauty isnt defined by hair, weight, orskin; its kindness that gives you a beautiful smile, faith that gives you asparkling eye, and love that gives you a genuine glow.

On the Locks of Love website there is guidelines for donating

hair. The hair must be at least 10in. in length. The hair must

be gathered in a ponytail or braid. It must be clean and

completely dry.The ponytail or braid must be placed in a

plastic bag and then in an envelope. The website also lists

more specific guidelines for certain types of hair.

TERM 17

DEFINITION 17 Through Jordann Jewelry you can buy a necklace or bracelet where 25% ofthe purchase price will be donated to the Locks of Love foundation. You can also help by donating money. There is a pledge form you can download from the Locks of Love websiteand mail it to the address provided on the website. There is also an online donation form for financial contributions. TERM 18

DEFINITION 18 The more individuals who choose to donate to the Locks of Lovefoundationwill lead to more children being able to receive a prothesis and therefore lesschildren who will face their childhood without hair.Look at the support for cancer patients who lose their hair duringtreatment.Cancer patients have so much support and love during their battle. Why let anything be different for a different cause of hair loss? TERM 19

DEFINITION 19 Some may argue that the Locks of Love foundation sells the hair and chargesa lot for the prothesis. On the website it specifically states what they sell to help offset themanufacturing costs. The hair that is sold is hair that is unable to be used. This hair is either too short in length or gray hair. The website states that children receive these prosthesis free of charge. TERM 20

DEFINITION 20 Now that I have a reasonable solution, I will help you visualize what willhappen if action if not taken soon.Imagine you are married and have a little girl who is 4 years old and younotice a patch of her hair missing. You take her to the doctor and find out she has an auto-immune disease calledAlopecia. As months pass, your daughter losses 75-100% of her hair.

Kids tease her at school and she starts to become more introverted. You see her lose interest in her favorite activities. You notice she no longer wants to hang out with her friends at preschool. You try to explain to her how her hair doesnt define who she is and that sheis unique. It gets to the point where your daughter no longer wants to attend preschool. You wonder what you can do to help you poor little girl.If only there was a place to go to to get hair for her to wear. TERM 22

DEFINITION 22 I hope you all have gained a better understand as to why Locks of Loveofisso important for children.First, I explained the need for Locks of Love and how they help childrensuffering from medical conditions causing hair loss.Next, I proposed a solution to help these children who suffer from hair lossmedical conditions. Then, I helped you visualize what will happen if action is not taken soon. TERM 23
