Learning Outcome Statements:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Label triads, seventh chords and their inversions using Roman numeral analysis.
  2. Understand figured bass notation.
  3. Demonstrate principles of correct doubling and voice leading.
  4. Understand cadences and their role within musical phrases.
  5. Identify/write non-harmonic tones.
  6. Understand progressive/retrogressive chord progressions and how secondary chords function within the structure.
  7. Synthesize all principles of tonal harmony through harmonization techniques.

Standards:

The student will meet the learning outcomes at the following level, degree or measurement:

  1. The learner will analyze or write chords utilizing Roman numeral analysis with 70% accuracy.
  2. The student will interpret a short excerpt that utilizes figured bass.
  3. The learner will write a four-measure excerpt using correct doubling and voice leading principles based on a figured bass pattern.
  4. The learner will analyze cadences and explain their role within a musical phrase.
  5. The learner will analyze and interpret non- harmonic tones within a melodic and/or harmonic phrase.
  6. The learner will identify chord progressions and explain their function in regards to progressions or retrogressions.
  7. The learner will harmonize a melodic line using proper techniques of tonal harmony.
