What is the function of the Application layer? ✔✔Works with specific networking applications such as web browser programs, file transfer programs and email. What is the function of the Presentation layer? ✔✔*Ensures character code recognition
The lower layers of the OSI model are: ✔✔Transport - layer 4 Network - layer 3 Data link - layer 2 Physical - layer 1 Define the acronym OSI ✔✔Open Systems Interconnected What is the purpose of the OSI model? ✔✔The OSI Reference Model is valuable as a tool for explaining how networks function, and for describing the relationships between different networking technologies and protocols. What does data encapsulation mean when referring to the OSI model? ✔✔When a network device sends a message, the message will take the form of a packet. Each OSI (open system interconnection) model layer adds a header to the packet. The packet is then covered with some information directing it onward to a destination; this is analogous to the address on a letter in which the actual message is wrapped or carried inside an envelope. What does data de-capsulation mean? ✔✔The reverse of data encapsulation is decapsulation, which refers to the successive layers of data being removed or unwrapped at the receiving end of the network.
Examples of protocols that work on the Application layer are: ✔✔TELNET, HTTP, FTP, TFTP, SMTP and NTP. Examples of protocols used at the Presentation layer: ✔✔Defines encryption, compression, conversion and other coding functions for GIF, JPEG, MPEG, MIME and ASCII Examples of protocols/APIs that work at the Session layer are: ✔✔RPC (remote procedure call) and NETBIOS Examples of protocols operate at the Transport layer: ✔✔TCP, UDP, NETBEUI and SPX Examples of protocols/devices which operate at the Network layer: ✔✔Protocols: IP, IPX, ICMP, RIP, OSPF and BGP. Devices: layer 3 switches and routers. Examples of devices working at the Data Link layer are: ✔✔switchs, bridges, WAPs (Wireless Application Protocol) and NICs (Network Inferface Connection)
