Objectives: By the time you have finished your work on this material, you should know the following
information:
1) The difference between a physical change and a chemical change.
2) The meanings of the coefficients in a chemical equation.
3) How to balance a simple chemical equation.
4) The standard abbreviations for the states of matter.
5) How to calculate the mass of a chemical in a reaction if you know the mass of another chemical.
6) How to relate the mass of a chemical to the heat produced by a reaction.
7) How to calculate and interpret the Calorie value of a food.
8) The factors that speed up the rate of a reaction.
9) The relationship between activation energy and reaction rate.
10) How to interpret an energy diagram for a reaction.
11) How catalysts affect the activation energy of a reaction.
12) The meaning of the term chemical equilibrium, and the relationship between equilibrium and the
rates of the forward and reverse reactions.
13) How to predict the effect of various disturbances on an equilibrium mixture, using le Châtelier’s
Principle.
