GAIT ANALYSIS & TRAINING LAB

NURSING INSERVICE

PRACTICAL BLUEPRINT:

PTA students will develop and provide an inservice to the nursing students on the topics listed below. The PTA students are responsible for developing and organizing the inservice. A universal handout must be provided and a 10 question exam to be completed by the nursing students post inservice. The PTA students will have 2 ½ hours with the nursing students to complete the inservice.

*****Outside class time will be needed to organize the inservice and practice techniques & procedures.**

I. Objectives The following objectives will be addressed: Lab Module 1 Objective # Develop an inservice and instruct other health care students in gait patterns and guarding techniques utilizing appropriate verbal communication. Module 2 objective 7Develop an inservice and instruct other health care students in transfer techniques and body mechanics Lab Practical objectives 1h Demonstrate proper body mechanics while handling equipment and mock patients 1k Professional behavior, good communication skills, and safety awareness 1p demonstrate behavior that reflects practice standards that are legal, ethical and safe, and consistent with the PT practice act and ethics

II. Content The following content should be included in the Inservice to the nurses, the PTA student handout

  1. Fitting ambulation aides walkers, crutches and canes
  2. Sit to stand and stand to sit with ambulation aides walkers, crutches and canes
  3. Gait pattern PWB and NWB with crutches, walkers; gait pattern for ambulation with canes
  4. Techniques for guarding in gait training level and uneven surfaces
  5. Ambulation with assisitive devices on stairs
  6. Transfers: *correct body mechanics and techniques for the following Supine to sitting Bed to stretcher/stretcher to bed Bed to chair/chair to bed or bed to wheelchair/wheelchair to bed
  7. AROM and PROM and the difference b/n active and passive

III. Expectations PTA Students MUST develop as a group the following:

  1. Universal handout for all the nursing students Handout must be well organized, clear, easy to follow
  2. Develop a post inservice Exam to be given post PTA instruction to the nursing students to assess effectiveness of teaching techniques. Must have 10 questions.
  3. Number of stations and determine content covered at each station within time frame allotted.

IMPORTANT: The handout to be used and exam MUST be reviewed and cleared by the instructor before September 21, 2005. Rough drafts may be turned in prior to this date for review and recommendations by the instructor
