  1. In the event of ice or snow, please use your individual judgment about attending class. If the college announces classes will begin one hour late, 8 a.m. classes will report at 9 a.m. Please call so that we may be aware of your status.
  2. If the clinical instructor directs the student to return to the lab for repeat of hands-on-skills or additional instruction, or if the student feels he/she needs additional instruction, it is the students responsibility to arrange additional time with the lab instructor.
  3. The student will provide the lab instructor with a self checked off “Skill Checklist” at the end of each weekly skill lab session. Also, any required skill “write-up” (excluding Physical Assessment assignment) will be turned in to the instructor at the end of each lab session. Checklists and write-ups will be returned to the student at the next scheduled lab session. It will be the responsibility of each student to maintain a skills checklist log book.
  4. RSCC policy allows faculty members to temporarily remove or exclude from the classroom any student engaged in disruptive conduct. For purposes of this class, disruptive conduct is defined as, but is not limited to, behavior that obstructs or disrupts the learning environment. Examples can include the use of offensive language, harassment of students or faculty, outbursts from a student that disrupts the flow of instruction or prevents concentration on the subject taught, and failure to cooperate in maintaining classroom decorum. http://www.rscc.cc.tn.us/webfolders/JARABEKLC/CONDUCT%20AND%20DISCIPLINE%202007-2008.pdf
  5. Disruptive conduct also includes the use of any electronic or other noise or light –emitting devices such as beepers, pagers, cell phones, palm pilots, laptop computers, gameboys, CD players, and the like that disturb others. Use of such items is therefore prohibited in the classroom. Cellular telephones are not to be used during class for any purpose, including making or receiving calls, photographs, text messages, or playing games.
  6. Disruptive conduct will lead to exclusion from class for the remainder of the class period. A student excluded from the classroom for disruptive conduct is responsible for any class assignments made or tests given during his/her absence.
  7. If a student demonstrates problem behaviors (tardiness, absence, late assignment, etc.), an oral warning will be given. Recurrent problems will be documented in the students' record. Follow-up by the student with the Director of Nursing may be required and may result in disciplinary actions being taken.
  8. Audio recording of skills lab sessions is prohibited
  9. Students are expected to dress appropriately for skills labs. (No shorts or open toed shoes.)

NURSING LAB EVALUATION POLICY

Grading of lab will be on a pass/fail basis. To pass skills lab and progress in the program each student must satisfactorily complete all three of the following components:

  1. Attendance and practice at all 13 scheduled labs.
  2. Satisfactorily complete weekly checklist and required written assignments.
  3. Pass the Nursing Lab Skill Competency Exam.

Nursing Division

Failure to pass any of the three components of skills lab will result in an unsatisfactory grade for the clinical component of the associated course and will result in the student receiving a grade no higher than "D" for the course.

Test questions related to Nursing Skills Lab content will be included in selected classroom quizzes and exams.

Skills Lab Practice

I understand that my participation in the practice of the following invasive skills in the Nursing

Skills Lab is voluntary and at my discretion:

1. Finger stick blood glucose monitoring

I understand that participation in the practice of this skill involves some degree of risk. The risks

inherent in this procedure includes local bleeding and infection and infection transmitted through

contact with blood-borne organisms including, but not limited to, Human Immunodeficiency

Virus (HIV which causes AIDS) and Hepatitis B or C. These can be transmitted through

accidental needle stick injury or by contact of broken skin or mucous membranes with blood,

which carries these or other blood-borne organisms.
