Jessica-Lea Smith Excelsior University NUR 209 October 2024 As an LPN at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, I have had the privilege of caring for diverse patients. Throughout my experiences, I have become increasingly aware of my own implicit biases and how they can influence my interactions with patients from various backgrounds. Initially, I realized that my gut reactions often stem from societal stereotypes and cultural narratives ingrained in me over time. For instance, when I encounter patients from certain ethnic groups, I have noticed a subconscious tendency to make assumptions about their health literacy, lifestyle choices, or compliance with medical recommendations. These reactions are not conscious thoughts but rather instinctive feelings that can a ect my approach to patient care. Upon reflection, I recognize that these gut reactions may be triggered by previous experiences or comments made by others in my professional or personal life. For example, hearing derogatory remarks about a specific demographic may have influenced my perceptions, leading to biases I was unaware of. Acknowledging that such biases can hinder my ability to provide holistic and compassionate care is essential. To overcome these implicit biases, I commit to ongoing self-reflection and education. I will actively seek to understand my patients' cultural, social, and economic contexts. Engaging in cultural competency training and participating in discussions about bias in healthcare can also be instrumental in broadening my perspective. It is vital to approach each patient individually, free from preconceived notions, and actively listen to their unique stories and experiences. Additionally, I will make a conscious e ort to challenge my gut reactions when I notice them arising. This can be done by asking myself critical questions: “What evidence do I have to support this reaction?” or “How might this patient perceive my care?” Such reflective practices will help mitigate the influence of bias on my patient interactions.
In conclusion, recognizing and addressing implicit bias is crucial in providing holistic care to my patients. By fostering an environment of empathy, understanding, and cultural sensitivity, I can ensure that my patients feel respected and valued, ultimately leading to improved health outcomes. I am committed to this journey of self-awareness and growth, knowing that it will enhance my practice as a nurse and positively impact the lives of those I care for.
