Running head: NURSES AND SOCIAL MEDIA 1 Nurses and Social Media XO15 Information Literacy: Jacqueline Carrau July 29, 2020
Nurses and Social Media I chose scenario three for my topic. Emily was a nursing student who was doing her clinical rotations and was on pediatrics at the time. Emily had a 3-year-old patient Tommy that she cared for. One day during her rotation, Emily was so proud of Tommy for receiving chemotherapy and battling leukemia. She decided to ask Tommy the three-year-old if it was okay to take a picture with him, and of course, happily, Tommy agreed. Tommy’s guardian, his mother, was not present and was in the cafeteria and never gave Emily the okay to take a picture of Tommy. In the film that Emily took, it also exposed the room number that Tommy was staying in as well, which was room number 324. Emily went on and shared the picture she captured on social media on a Facebook page with her nursing peers to show them who she has been taking care of. In this scenario, with Emily’s situation, a lot of parties are affected by her actions. It starts with Emily being kicked out of her nursing program for breaking privacy violations as well as HIPPA violations. To Tommy and his family having their privacy violated but also putting the hospital in a wrong position for a lawsuit because Emily was under their name doing her clinical rotations and should’ve known the guidelines of the hospital. Therefore the hospital can get in trouble just from a student taking one “innocent” photo with a patient she was excited to be taking care of. This scenario violated a lot of guidelines on the appropriate use of social media. The post violates the confidentiality and privacy of the patient and his family since Emily did not have consent from the guardian of the 3-year-old child. Tommy after this could be identified as a cancer patient and as well as being a patient at a specific hospital and also strangers knowing the room number is in. As per the ANA’s principles for Social media networking, they should not
