Routed Networks Experiment: Understanding Subnets, Subnet Masks, and Routed Networks, Lecture notes of Network Design

An experiment on routed networks, focusing on the role of subnets, subnet masks, and the advantages of routed networks over switched networks. Students are encouraged to reproduce the experiment in the lab and answer related questions. Ip addresses can be assigned differently, and changes should be noted.

What you will learn

  • What is the function of a subnet in a network?
  • Why is the subnet mask crucial when analyzing an IPv4 address?
  • What are the advantages of using a routed network over a switched network?

Routed Networks Using the physical components that we have in the lab reproduce the following design. Feel free to assign different IPs but make sure to mention your changes When done, please answer the below questions

  1. What is the role of a subnet?
  2. Why is the subnet mask so important when analysing an IPv4 address?
  3. Explain the advantages of a routed network over a switched network
  4. Try to ping from one PC in subnet 1 to another one in subnet 2. Is it successful? Examine what happens in Wireshark.
