The final exam will be comprehensive, covering all aspects of the course. A test blueprint will be
forthcoming. In the meantime, to guide your studies on the most recent material, this guide has
been developed. The exam will cover the following textbook chapters: 51-57, which cover these
broad topics: Gastrointestinal Alterations, Genitourinary Alterations, Endocrine Alterations,
Neurologic Alterations, Mental Health and Cognitive Function Alterations, Musculoskeletal
Alterations and Skin Integrity Alterations.
Gastrointestinal Alterations
For the following disease processes, know etiology/pathophysiology, signs and symptoms,
diagnostic testing, therapeutic management (including surgical intervention and medications)
and care/nursing management considerations (including discharge planning and teaching):
Appendicitis, Cleft lip and palate, Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and GER disease, Hernias,
Hirschsprung’s disease, Intussusception, Omphalocele, and Pyloric stenosis
Have thorough understanding of dehydration, fluid and electrolyte and acid-base balance.
Understand gastroenteritis and constipation and appropriate management.
Review inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and the nutritional support required.
Genitourinary Alterations
Study the information provided on glomerulonephritis: etiology/pathophysiology, signs and
symptoms, therapeutic management (including common medications), considerations based
on nursing process, discharge planning and teaching.
Study the information provided on nephrotic syndrome: etiology/pathophysiology, signs and
symptoms, therapeutic management (including common medications), considerations based
on nursing process, discharge planning and teaching.
Understand hypospadias and epispadias, associated defects, their therapeutic management
and appropriate nursing management.
Recognize appropriate urine collection techniques, signs and symptoms of UTIs and
teaching for the prevention of them in the different age groups.
Additional topic with which to be familiar with and understand its care management:
enuresis, cryptorchidism.
Understand Wilms’ tumor: its etiology/pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, therapeutic
management (including common medications), considerations and special precautions based
on the nursing process, discharge planning and teaching.
