MINDSET
- it is a set of beliefs that shape how you make
sense of the world and yourself. It influences
how you think, feel, and behave in any given
situation. It means that what you believe about
yourself impacts your success or failure.
GROWTH AND FIXED MINDSETS
The concept of growth and fixed mindsets
was coined by psychologist Carol Dweck in her
2006 book, Mindset: The New Psychology of
Success.
Growth Mindset
• believes that intelligence and talents can be
improved
• Leads to : Enforcing flaws and mistakes as
opportunities for growth, accepting mistakes as
part of the learning process, and feeling
empowered to reach goals.
• Developed IQ: Sees intelligence as something
you can develop over time.
• Motivation: Willingly embraces challenges and
risks possible failure.
• Effort: Believes that effort and practice can
lead to mastery.
• Acceptance: See failures as temporary
setbacks and persists in the achievement of
goals.
• Inspiration: See other people’s success as a
source of inspiration.
• Feedback: View feedback as an opportunity to
grow and applies constructive criticism.
Fixed Mindset
• believes that talent and intelligence are fixed
• Leads to: Hiding flaws and mistakes, feeling
ashamed about “failures”, giving up easily, and
being unmotivated to strive for or achieve goals.
• Innate IQ: Sees intelligence and talent as fixed.
• Resistance: Avoids challenges to prevent the
possibility of failure.
• Inertia: Believes that talent is innate, so effort
and practice are not important.
• Guilt: Gives up easily and shows temporary
setbacks as permanent failures.
• Comparisons: Sees other people’s success as
a threat of source of jealousy,
• Criticism: View feedback as a personal attack
and ignores constructive criticism.
Are people born smart?
• Einstein’s teacher said that he was
‘academically subnormal’
• Michael Jordan’s coach said that he was not
more talented than other people
• Walt Disney was told that he lacked ‘creative
imagination’
The passion for stretching yourself and
sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not
going well, is the hallmark of the growth
mindset. This is the mindset that allows people
to thrive during some of the most challenging
times in their lives.
