Standard of nursing care are helping to plan, implement and
assess the quality of services and to show that nursing is accountable
to society.
Definition of standard according to ANA is described as a criterion used
by general agreement as acceptable level of practice or an established
norm.
The standard of nursing care describe a competent level of
behavior in the professional role, including activities related to
communication, ethics, culturally congruent practice, collaboration,
leadership, education, evidence-based practice and research, quality of
practice, resource utilization, and environmental health. It provides a
foundation as to how a nurse should act and what he/she should or
should not do in his/her professional capacity. Also, it is important
because standards give nurses the necessary information that they
need to know the quality of care that they must provide to patient and
establish measures in which to evaluate the care provided.
Thus, standard of nursing care provide guidelines for nursing
performance. These are the rules or definition of what it means to
provide competent care.
