SECTION A

Q1. Diagrammatically depict the four main classes of receptors, giving examples of each. Describe the different possible ways in which drugs can produce their effects on receptors, using graphs and specific examples to illustrate your answer. Q2. Describe, with the aid of diagrams, how physicochemical factors and routes of administration influence absorption of drugs, giving specific drug examples. Q3. Describe, with the aid of a diagram, the stages of drug discovery.

SECTION B

Q4. Discuss enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) using diagrams where appropriate. In your answer discuss:

  • The difference between competitive and non-competitive assays,
  • The different types of ELISAs, and
  • Advantages and disadvantages of using antibodies in ELISAs. Q5. Write an essay on the production and uses of monoclonal antibodies. Include a brief discussion on the advantages of monoclonal antibodies over polyclonal antibodies. Q6. Describe how components of the immune system (antibodies, cells, cytokines) can be used in the treatment of disease.
