Madison’s Nightlife Sets the Bar A look at Madison’s stereotypical bar scene UW Madison has bars that are nationally known for being the sweet spot for drinks, dancing and live entertainment. Nate Cudworth, a UW Madison senior, is one of many students that are proud of UW Madison’s party school reputation. “I think it shows that there is always something to do here, and that gives people another reason to want to come to Madison for college,” Cudworth said. The party reputation takes Madison beyond prestigious academics and great athletics. There are many opportunities for campus nightlife, and from the bars to the house parties, there seems to be a place for everyone. UW Madison students encounter many high level classes that affix increased stress and a night out (or two) may be just what the doctor ordered to help students blow off a little steam. Bars with stereotypical reputations become time tested places for Madison students to have fun on a wild Friday night. The students that visit these bars go back time and time again, knowing they will get what they are looking for. Theresa Austin, a junior at UW Madison who recently turned 21, has spent the last few months checking out all of the stereotypical campus bars. “Wando’s is always a good time, that’s where the football players go, and the third floor is only for Wisconsin students,” Austin said. Wando’s made Elite Daily ’s list of the 45 things that UW Madison students must do before they graduate, where drinking a fishbowl is determined as a must. Fishbowls are a very popular Wando’s staple, with their tagline on both their website and their Facebook page being, “Home of the Fishbowl.” Cudworth has been involved with the bar scene for a few years. “The fishbowl is pretty good. They basically take a bunch of alcohol, pour it in a container and sell it for pretty cheap,” Cudworth said. “I think that’s why everyone likes it so much.” Wando’s website also features specials such as Tuesday’s free bacon nights and Monday’s $ Miller Lite or Coors Light bottles. “I like Wando’s because it fits what I’m looking for, to have fun and dance but still remember my night, not to get sloppy,” Austin said. Cudworth also highlighted Whiskey Jack’s as a rowdy place to have a fun night out.

“Whiskey Jack’s has a pool table, so that’s different and fun to play. Thursday nights are student nights so the beer is pretty cheap,” Cudworth said. Whiskey Jack’s is not only about the drinks. They also feature a mechanical bull, which also happened to make Elite Daily ’s must do before graduation list. “I’ve seen the bull in action, and it’s funny to watch. People get drunk and try to ride it and end up falling off. It’s entertaining,” Cudworth said. With live music, two for one shots and tallboy Tuesday, Whiskey Jack’s website shows that this stereotypical bar is a must hit with a variety of entertainment options for any night on the town. The Kollege Klub, affectionately nicknamed “the KK” by UW Madison students, has a national reputation as a great on campus bar. USA Today featured the Kollege Klub as the number six best college bar in America. In a location close to both State and Langdon streets, the KK sits near two very populated party roads. People walking by may be drawn in by the Badger feel of this corner sports bar. “I think of the KK as mostly a frat bar. Most of the people that go there are either in a fraternity or are in the athletics,” Cudworth said. The Kollege Klub Facebook page features specials such as beer n shot night, where you get a shot with any bottle of beer, and Saturday Days, which have $5 bloody marys and $3 mimosas. With all of the nightlife choices in Madison, some bars have a reputation, even with the under 21 crowd. Angela Whicher, a UW Madison student who turns 21 next month, is already thinking about her nights out at the bar. “I’m looking forward to going to the bars because then I don’t have to think so hard when I’m going out, and I can just go to the bar if I want to,” Whicher said. “I am excited to do karaoke and to play games. I also really like to dance, so going to some bars where other people are dancing would be a lot of fun.” With all of the bar choices in Madison, social media can lend a hand in bringing in business. Bars often post their upcoming specials and events on their social media accounts. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have all had a hand in advertising for awhile. Now, even Snapchat has made its campus bar scene debut. “I follow UW On Tap, and they put out a story where each bar submits a photo of their deals for the night,” Austin said. “That app has influenced where I go if I’m looking for a deal.”
