Madeline Fueshko Inquiry Project 11 - 29 - 2021 Is plastic surgery the answer to all our questions? Or is it something that brainwashes us to think that we need it? How much is too much? Is there even a limit? Dr. B. Vijaya Sree from Medicover Hospitals defines plastic surgery as “a medical intervention with the purpose of altering, reshaping or sculpting the human body.” It sounds great, doesn’t it? But not only can you change your appearance to plump your lips or get a face lift with “cosmetic” surgery, but you can also get reconstructive surgery to fix things as “Craniofacial surgery” and “Reconstruction of burnt tissues” But with pros, come cons. The pros are simple, you fix what you want to improve on your body. But the cons are the health risks, the price, and the chance it goes wrong. Although this sounds great, how do you know if it's best for you? Not everyone can take a visit to their local plastic surgeon and get surgery. According to smartbeautyguide.com a breast lift itself costs $4,616, and the average cost of a tummy tuck is $6,622. “Oftentimes the constellation fee is deducted from the procedure." Not everyone can drop that amount of money to fix their insecurities. With that, leads to delf hatred and doubt. Addiction center.com says “Many researchers have found that the majority of people who are addicted to plastic surgery also suffer from coal occurring [body dysmorphic disorder].” People with this disorder depend on plastic surgery to help get rid of their insecurities. These people have “unrealistic expectations” when it comes to looking the way they want. “These people will then continue to go under the knife and spent thousands of dollars on something that fails to
make them feel any better.” Thats when the addiction starts, once you start, you're not going to want to stop. Jena Hillard, Author of Addiction: An Unhealthy Obsession With Perfection” explains how to much surgery can affect the body in harmful ways and can even be fatal. Things such as “excessive scar tissues, blood clot infections, collapsed muscles, and cardiac arrest due to anesthesia.” She also says that some people who are addicted will go to lower qualified surgeons when they get denied the surgery they want from other surgeons. But luckily for people who are suffering from this addiction, there is help they can get. “Cognitive behavioral therapy has proven to be very effective in treating both plastic surgery addiction and body dysmorphic disorder.” So, if you do have the money for these surgeries, by all means go ahead. Just know that there are health dangers if you have done too much. But it is not easy to just stop getting these surgeries. Onces patients with this addiction know they can change their selves, to them, there is nothing that that can't change. They keep going and going until they feel perfect, but to them, they will never feel perfect or satisfied. It gets to a point where these types of people just want a change. They want something done just to feel something. So sometimes they come in with ridiculous requests. From YouTube video “Unbelievable Plastic Surgery Addicted Patients” Patients come in with lists of ridiculous things they want done. The one patient wanted an eyelash transplant, but not like a normal eyelash transplant. She wants to use her pubic hair. It sounds foul, but when you're addicted, you can't help it. Another patient said he wanted a un human like nose. He wanted to look like an elf.
take into consideration how long it will take to recover from your procedure and if you're able to take a pause in your life. Some people can easily get the time off work, but suppose someone is a single parent with kids, they may not be able to get the proper recover because they need to watch their kids, or vice versa. Recover time is very important and often forgot about when it comes to surgery. On the other hand, plastic surgery can help us feel good about ourselves. We obviously know that I can help fix our insecurities. But it can also help the way we live. If you look into the surgery you want and know what you're getting into, it can really help you mentally. Author Maluhia Shaw says that getting plastic surgery on yourself can improve self-esteem issues, help with depression, and “overall happiness.” You need to go into surgery with an open mind. Know that this isnt going to solve everything, but it will help ease your insecurity or problem. “...if you feel better about yourself and find yourself more attractive after undergoing cosmetic surgery, chances are you will be happier on a day-to-day basis with yourself and life.” That quote explains it perfectly and helps give a positive sense of what surgery can do to a person's life. Not only can plastic surgery make you look your best, plastic surgery can also be life changing and fix things that have been making it hard to live your everyday life. People who have been through physical trauma can get the right help and give them the confidence they need to go back to living their best life. Things such as burn marks, excess skin, and any other part of their body that brings them down. I once watched a tv show on Netflix about a woman who had really bad skin growing up. Her skin was very textured and damaged due to everything she has tried. She went through numerous procedures to help fix it and she loved her results. She said she
felt confident and did not feel like she had to hide under a lot of makeup or cover her skin. She felt beautiful for the first time in a very long time. With that being said, more and more people today are getting surgery to fix a part of themselves they want to improve. From “Plastic surgery: Beauty or beast” author Melissa Dittman says “The number of cosmetic procedures increased by 44% from 2003 to 2004, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Plastic surgeons conducted a record of 11.9 procedures (in the previous year)” Dr. Lara Devgan says, “most patients seek [cosmetic] procedures to feel like the best versions of themselves.” A lot of people are getting surgery more and more due to how big social media is. Everyone is always taking pictures and posting it, so people are seeing themselves more along with a bunch of other people on the internet such as family and friends. Also, it is more accepting to get plastic surgery today. People are not afraid to talk about the work they got done and its encouraging other people to do the same. People should not be ashamed to get plastic surgery if it is something they genuinely want. If it will make what you see in the mirror happy, and you are healthy enough, then go for the surgery. It has helped a lot of people and it may help you too. Keep in mind, there is a human cutting open your body, so you want to make sure that when you do decide the take on this surgery, you choose the right surgeon. You want someone that will do what's best for you, along with listening to your needs and concerns. “.... The greatest benefits of surgery behind this are most likely choosing the right specialist plastic surgeon.” Says Dr. Rebecca Wyten, MBBS, FRACS, Specialist plastic surgeon. If you don’t get the proper care, you can end up with a mishap. “Misdiagnosis, improper treatment, and botched surgeries are
