Lord of the Flies Chapter 4

Sequence

Event Significance

Roger and Maurice trek through the little boys’ castle.

This shows their disregard for others. Maurice feels some remorse, but not Roger.

Johnny throws sand at Percival to make him cry.

The author shows cruelty is fun for some.

Roger watches Henry play in a tidepool. When a coconut falls by Roger, he gets the idea to throw stones at Henry, but is careful not to hit him.

Roger is conditioned to not hurt someone purposely.

Jack paints a mask on his face as camouflage, and the hunters start a pig hunt.

His face is so scary it makes his hunters uneasy.

Piggy discusses making sun dials with Ralph. Piggy is thinking in terms of invention and civilization.

Ralph sees smoke from a passing ship. He, Maurice and Simon run to the mountain, but discover their signal fire has gone out.

The fire was abandoned for the pig hunt. They missed the chance for rescue.

Ralph spots the hunters coming toward them with a gutted pig and chanting, “Kill the pig!”. He glares at Jack.

Rescue has been sacrificed for the sake of the pig.

The hunters are excited about their success, but Ralph scolds them for letting the fire go out. Jack and Ralph argue.

The differences between Ralph and Jack are magnified.

Piggy joins in the accusations and Jack attacks him, breaking one lens of Piggy’s glasses.

Jack doesn’t attack Ralph, but Piggy, the easier target. Everyone needs the glasses, but Piggy is crippled without them.

Jack apologizes to Ralph for letting the fire go out. Ralph is too angry to accept.

This makes Jack look good in the eyes of the others.

Ralph tells them to rebuild the fire and then looks on silently while Jack orders everyone about.

Ralph is asserting his being chief by standing his ground.

With permission, Ralph takes Piggy’s glasses to light the fire.

The bond between Ralph and Jack is broken and is replaced by a bond between Ralph

and Piggy.

They roast bits of meat over the fire. Jack means to leave Piggy out of the feast, but Simon shares his. This angers Jack.

Jack is still attacking Piggy. Simon shows compassion.

Maurice changes the subject by asking about the pig. This leads to the boys reenacting the hunt and dancing around the fire, chanting, “Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Bash her in.”

The boys get worked up about hunting. Ralph feels envious and a bit left out.

Ralph announces that he is going to call a meeting.
