Pulmonary surfactant: reduces surface tension> keeping the alveoli open and not flattened -prevents spontaneous atelectasis In the big picture of what happens in the lungs (the two most important things that happen in the respiratory system): · Ventilation moves air in and out of the lungs · Gas exchange at alveolus Figure 9- 4 oxygens per hems hundreds of hemoglobins per red blood cells. Signs and Symptoms: · dyspnea: difficulty breathing ------- acute · coughing: dry cough> mucus free & productive cough> bringing up mucus ------ acute · clubbing: Pleural Cavity vacuum > negative pressure
