Graham, Donald Kagan, Steven Ozment, and Frank M. Turner. The Heritage of World Civilizations. Vol. Two: 1500 to the Present. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Person/Prentice Hall, 2012. Course Description: A survey of World History from 1500 to the present. The course will deal with political, economic, cultural, and social history in this time frame. Learning Objectives: When you complete this course, you will be able to:
Attendance: Attendance in an online class is based on participation in the class, which is determined by online activity. After the first week of class, those students who have not logged into their online course and begun their work will be dropped from the class. In addition, up until midterm or โlast day to drop without academic penalty,โ I may withdraw any student who has ceased to participate; the student will receive a grade of โWโ on their academic record. After midterm or โlast day to drop without academic penalty,โ I will continue to withdraw students who cease to participate; however, the student will receive a grade of โWFโ on their academic record. The student is responsible for understanding that withdrawal or faculty withdrawal may result in loss of financial aid and that failing to properly withdraw from a course if you stop participating may result in receiving a failing grade, โFโ, for that course. Course Grade: The course grade will be determined by the total of points accumulated from the quizzes, homework assignments, discussion boards, and exams. Your grade for the pre-quizzes, discussion boards, post-quizzes and homework assignments will be based on the quantity and quality of the work. Your grade on the exams will be based on the accuracy of your answers. The total maximum number of points available and your total points accumulated will be determined at the end of the semester. Letter grades will be assigned as follows: A โ 90% of total points; B โ 80% of the total points; C โ 70% of the total points; D
Discussion Boards: Post three (3) questions to the discussion board for each lecture. Discussion board questions should come from the online lectures. Each student should post new questions; repeat questions will be deleted. The grade for posting questions (5 points) will be based on posting new questions. Post three (3) responses to discussions board questions for each lecture. Each student must answer a new question. Repeat answers to questions will be deleted. The grade for posting responses (10 points) will be based on posting responses to new questions. All responses should be posted in complete sentences. YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT FOR ANY POSTS, QUESTIONS OR REPLIES, MADE AFTER THE CLOSE DATE OF THE EXAM. Homework Assignments: It is the responsibility of each student to prepare homework assignments, in your own words, before the due date. Homework assignments should be submitted via the drop-boxes in GA/View as an attachment. Students are required to complete all homework assignments. Exam questions are based on the homework assignments. If you do not complete the homework assignments, you will not be able to answer the questions on the exam. All homework assignments are graded based on the quality of the answer. You will lose points for incomplete answers. Late assignments may receive a grade of โ0โ. IF YOU TURN IN HOMEWORK LATE, I WILL DEDUCT 10 POINTS FOR EACH DAY IT IS LATE. HOMEWORK TURNED IN AFTER EACH EXAM HAS ENDED WILL RECEIVE NO CREDIT, BUT YOU MUST TURN IT IN TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE EXAM. Exams may not be taken until all assignments are submitted. Consequently, a student can fail the class with a grade of โFโ for not doing the assigned homework. Examinations: Each exam covers one chapter or section of the class, 3-4 lectures. Exams will be composed of multiple choice questions. You must have a grade for each element of the chapter or section work before the exam will open for you. In addition, before the exam for Part IV can be taken, completion of course evaluation is required. Missed exams will result in a score of โ0โ for that exam and the student will be dropped from the class. All exams must be proctored. Exams may be taken at the Darton College Testing Center or off-campus with an approved proctor. Leah Sandbach is the coordinator for proctored exams. She can
let you know if there is an approved proctor located in your area. You may reach her at (229) 317-6319 or leah.sandbach@darton.edu. Exams may be scheduled any time after the last assignment is due for that section but must be completed BEFORE 11:59 PM on the last posted test date for that particular exam.
The following items are included in the syllabus for students to know this class's course policies Academic Honor Code: Please review the information and sanctions on the website. Those standards and sanctions will be applied to homework and exams in this class. Specifically, if you cheat on an exam, you will earn a grade of โ0โ for that exam. If you turn in a homework assignment that is the same as another studentโs, both of you will received a grade of โ0โ for that assignment. Homework submissions must be in your own words.
