Word Parts
bi- = Two
-cele = hernia
dys- = Bad
fasci/o = fasci (skin)
fibr/o = fibrous connective tissue
-ia = Condition
-ic = pertaining to
kines/o, kinesi/o = movement
my/o = muscle
-plegia = paralysis
-rrhexis = fracture
tax/o = coordinator, order
ten/o, tend/o, tendin/o = mean
ton/o = tension, tone, stretching
tri- = three
Medical Terms
abduction = moves away from the midline.
adduction = moves toward the midline.
adhesion = is a band of fibrous tissue
that holds structures together abnormally.
ataxia = the inability to coordinate
muscle activity during voluntary movement
atonic = means lacking normal muscle
tone or strength
atrophy = means weakness or wearing away
of body tissues and structures.
bradykinesia = extreme
slowness in movement
carpal tunnel syndrome = tendons that pass
through the carpal tunnel are chronically
overused and become inflamed and swollen
chronic fatigue syndrome = disorder of unknown
cause that affects many body systems
circumduction = circular movement of a limb at the
far end
contracture = the permanent
tightening of fascia, muscles, tendons, ligaments,
or skin that occurs when normally elastic
connective tissues are replaced with nonelastic
fibrous tissues.
dorsiflexion = movement that
bends the foot upward at the ankle. Pointing the
toes and foot upward decreases the angle between
the top of the foot and the front of the leg.
dyskinesia = distortion or
impairment of voluntary movement such as in a tic
or spasm
