Independence for Foster Youth: A Comprehensive Resource for Transitioning Foster Children, Study notes of Childhood Development

This website, 'independence for foster youth', serves as a valuable resource for foster care children, providing essential information and links on various topics such as jobs, education, financial aid, housing, budget, and health. Its primary focus is to help foster youth successfully transition into independent living. As a future social worker, this website would be an invaluable tool in my practice, enabling me to refer clients to these resources and support their educational goals.

1. Write a general analysis (summary) of what the website you have chosen is about.
The website that I chose, “Independence for Foster Youth”, serves as a resource for foster
care children. While browsing the website I found many helpful links for foster care children,
with subjects such as jobs, education, financial aid, housing, budget and health. Because
foster youth are often not provided with their needed resources regarding these topics, I find
that this website is a great creation. By browsing the website, I found that it’s main focus is
to help foster youth successfully transition into the crazy world on their own. Under the
“jobs” tab, resources regarding finding a job as well as links to programs which can help
foster youth get jobs are be found. Under the “education” tab, there are guides which aid in
preparing adolescents grades six through twelve for college. I think that this section of the
website is particularly helpful knowing the statistics of foster youth making it through high
school, let alone to higher education. Also on the education tab are links for Washington
State Programs which help in the education process of foster youth. For example:
Independent Living, Transitional Living, Passport for Foster Youth Promise Scholarship as
well as GEAR UP. Financial aid tips including getting a mentor and types and ways to apply
for financial aid are available when the “financial aid” tab is clicked. The housing tab
provides information regarding rental rights, cost of rent, selecting a roommate and college
housing. Personally I wish I had this information when I was finding my first apartment,
regardless of the fact that I was not a foster youth. Having all of this information at your
disposal is a very handy tool. Budget is also explained on this website, with categories such

as why to create a budget, how to track your expenses as well as how to construct a budget. The last tab on the “Independence for Foster Youth” webpage is regarding health, including how to find a doctor and how to obtain medical records. Overall I think that this webpage is a fantastic resource for foster youth as well as social workers working directly with this population. There are many helpful resources contained on this single webpage.

2. Write a synthesis (blend/put together) of why this website is relative to a potential career that you may have in mind. I am currently working on a double major of Social Work and Children’s Studies, with the ultimate career goal of becoming an adoptions counselor or elementary school social worker. Before I obtain my Master of Social Work degree which is required for each of these careers, I plan on working for DSHS with hopes of gaining a position working with foster youth. In many of my social work classes, I have learned the statistics of foster youth gaining an education, and they are very depressing. This website, “Independence for Foster Youth”, would become a great resource for me in a profession regarding foster care and adolescents. I could not only use this website as a reference for myself, I would be able to refer clients to this page as well. I believe that it is very important for foster youth to break the trend of dropping out of high school and not continuing their education, so I took the information on this webpage very seriously. An education is a great starting point towards bettering your life, and being able to help provide resources to help foster youth obtain theirs would be a great privilege. I look forward to starting my career as a social worker bettering the lives of youth in America, and plan on implementing resources such as this one in my practice.
