Kara Benoit EDTC 100-G 10/30/ Kara: The True Story My name is Kara Faye (McLeod) Benoit. The following is based on true events of my life. Throughout my time on the globe, I have experienced numerous encounters that have shaped and made me who I am today. In the following selection, you will discover the various exciting and memorable events that are major landmarks in my life and that reveal my personality. I will say to you that I have a very extraordinary life, family, experiences, and ambitions that make me unique as an individual. I was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana on October 2, 1982 at 2:31 a.m. I grew up in Moss Bluff, Louisiana. I currently live in Lake Charles and have been married for 2 ½ years to the most wonderful husband. If I had been born in my mother’s hometown, I would have been born in Alaska. My grandmother is full blooded Inupiaq (Alaskan Native American), which makes my mom ½ and that makes me ¼. My great-grandfather was a famous Eskimo artist in Alaska. He even has artwork in the Smithsonian in Washington as well as throughout many museums, galleries, and books. He also drew a huge drawing in the Alaskan Airport called “Eskimo Life”. My uncle, brother, and I also share the talent of drawing and painting. I am good at drawing with a pencil, which I call graphite art. In high school, I drew a self portrait which looked like a mirror image. When I was younger, I had an interest in writing poems, short stories, and reading mystery books. I guess you could say I have a wild imagination.
In my twenty-five years of life, I must say that I have done some traveling. I have been as far north as Alaska, as far west as Las Vegas, as far east as North Carolina, and not-too-far-from-here south as Mexico. The most fun I experienced was in Vegas! The most breath taking was in Alaska, and the most dangerous was in North Carolina, riding on a motorcycle in the mountains on The Tail of the Dragon, which was an 11 mile stretch of 318 curves. During the time between traveling the world and experiencing new places, I also have certain hobbies that I love to do in my free time. My number one most favorite thing to do is scrap booking. I can not get enough of pictures, frames, and adding extra touches to them. I also enjoy thinking of and putting together decorations and coordinating them with vivid colors, noticeable themes, and unique furniture. Although I never have time to do so, I also enjoy reading a good mystery book by my favorite author, Mary Higgins Clark. My belief concerning life-long learners is that you never stop learning no matter how old you get. I am definitely a supporter of any type of education that will expand our students’ thinking and make them process it in their minds. I think that teachers play a major role throughout every student’s life. The teacher, her style of teaching, as well as the interactions with the students, depends on how well the child will perform. I believe you have to be patient and show your students that it is ok to ask questions. The teacher is there to teach and the students are there to learn. There have been wide arrays of experiences that I have been through in the past few years. One of them is my work experience. For about the past six years I have worked in the service industry in numerous restaurants as a waitress, bartender, hostess,
dances that they have. They all dress up in the customary costumes and dance around to the beat of drums while chanting their time-honored songs and prayers. It was definitely amazing, and it will give you chills because you felt like you were back in the olden days when Indians were prevalent. My short term goals are to hopefully pass all my classes with flying colors and to graduate in 2010. I also hope to enrich my learning experiences in school and in my observations to help me become a better teacher. My long term goals are definitely excelled from my short term goals. First of all, I see myself being a teacher for the next thirty years or so. And I also want to teach kids that learning can be fun and to make them eager to learn more. And I would love to finally start a family with my husband and eventually try to move back to my hometown Moss Bluff and teach at one of the schools. In closing, you have read about the uniqueness of my life, family, experiences, and ambitions. I want to share my learning experiences of where I have been, the things I have done and the people I have met, with children in my classes. I have chosen teaching as a career because I want to show my future students that learning can be done in a way that will be entertaining as well as educational. Every since I was old enough to baby-sit I instantly felt a connection with babies and kids. I want to help shape their unmolded minds into intelligent thinking minds that surpass the average kids today because I know they can do it, and it is possible. They just need a little bit more attention and encouragement, and soon I will be ready to be just the person to fill that position!
