JULIUS CAESAR: ACT 2, SCENE 1
PART 1:
Based on your reading assignment, fill in the missing blanks. The blanks with around them
means that you must insert a word directly from the text. The blanks without will either be a
character or place name. Note that part-way through the activity sheet, you have to note the line
number of the directly-quoted material! I provide them at the start, though! Happy hunting!
Note: Ignore, for now, the numbers that go before the blanks. They are numbered to help us
review the sheet later on

Brutus contemplates (1) _______________” (line 10) in his garden late at the night. He has
reached the conclusion that Julius Caesar must be (2) “_____________” (line 34). Brutus reasons
that, although Caesar isn't bad now, his ambition will change his nature and make him too (3)
“__________________” (line 33).
While doing all this thinking, Lucius, Brutus’s servant, enters with a (4) “_____________” (line
37) he's found. The letter says that Brutus should recognize his own noble nature and do
something before Rome falls to the tyranny of a monarch. Brutus is taken in and promises that, for
(5) _____________'s (line 56) sake, he won't fail.
The _______________________ (6) then show up at Brutus's door to try to win Brutus over to
their cause. Cassius introduces them all to Brutus, and then he suggests they “swear their (7)
_________________” (line 113), which Brutus opposes vehemently. He argues that they do not
need to swear an (8) “_______________” (line 114) to each other, but rather they must just be true
to their word, even if that word is murder.
Then they all have a little debate about whether to include (9) ________________ in the plot
against Caesar, but it's decided he will (10) never ______ anything (line ______) and
shouldn't be invited to join Team Secret Conspiracy.
Then they debate about whether or not they should also kill _______________ (11) because he’s
so close to Caesar. But, ____________(12) says that would be overkill (no pun intended!) because
he would be powerless without Caesar. He is described as being (13) “but a _____________ of
Caesar” (line ________). Take away that and the rest of the body becomes powerless! ‘Tis a very
famous metaphor They debate a little more and it’s finally decided that there is (14) “no
__________ in him” (line ____________) and that, therefore, they will not kill him.
The clock strikes 3:00 a.m. and they agree to part. Before they do, Cassius points out that Caesar
has been cautious lately because (15) “he is __________________ grown of late” (line _______).
Because of this, Caesar might not even be at the (16) _______________ that day. Decius tells
everyone not to worry; he'll show up at Caesar's place in the morning to make sure Caesar goes.
He says he can sway Caesar to come to the Capitol by (17) “being most ________________” (line
_______). In other words, Decius plans to appeal to Caesar’s vanity to manipulate him in going.
