NUI Galway Drama & Theatre Studies Exam, 2010/11, Exams of Literature

An examination paper from the national university of ireland, galway for the drama and theatre studies course in the academic year 2010/11. You are advised to spend no more than 30 minutes on this section.

(b) describe the cultural/historical context in which it developed,
(c) indicate (with specific detail) how the concept is exemplified in at least two
works you have read for this course.

Write an essay on ONE of the following.

  1. Discuss issues of rebellion in relation to any two plays or theories studied in the course.
  2. According to Martin Esslin, the common theme of the plays of the Theatre of the Absurd is the ‘sense of metaphysical anguish at the absurdity of the human condition’. Discuss this idea in relation to two plays studied in the course. One of the plays should be by Ionesco, Beckett or Pinter.
  3. Discuss the role of on-stage performance with reference to any two plays or theories studied in the course.
  4. Discuss the playwrights’ use of theatrical space in relation to any two plays or theories on the course.
  5. Discuss the treatment of gender in any two plays on the course.
  6. How does drama challenge social norms? Refer in your answer to any two plays and/or theories on the course.
