Issues in Process Monitoring and Improvement

March 28, 2006

Lesson 1: Process improvement is great as long as you do the work. Don't make me do anything extra.

Reason: Programmers are often overworked anyway (really).

Is time spent not coding given any value by management?

Rewards:

  1. Money or valuable items.
  2. Professional recognition.
  3. Paid attendance at professional conferences, etc.
  4. New equipment.
  5. Participation in new ventures. Being selected as a "leader".
  6. Promotion (if more pay).

How to Reward Teams? This builds up team identity.

Pay raises across the board. Bonuses are also good.

Rewarding a team is not the same as rewarding each member as an individual.

Management fads

  1. What is with all these Tshirts?
  2. Fads are OK if applied with sensitivity.
  3. Humor is generally "bad".

How to reward individuals who are part of a team?

Reward each equally?

Can you determine each person's individual level of effort or contribution to the project?
