Chem 201A Dr. Baxley IONS TO MEMORIZE
You need to memorize the following list of ions and elements, including their names, formulas and charges!
Make flashcards so you can recognize the symbols and names. Create a song or a haiku. Make a voice recording or mp3 and play it in your car or IPod. Do what ever it takes to learn them!
Anions nitrate hypochlorite iodide nitrite chlorite hydroxide nitride chlorate oxalate sulfite perchlorate hydrogen phosphate sulfide cyanide dihydrogen phosphate oxide acetate permanganate carbonate fluoride hydride hydrogen carbonate (bicarbonate) chloride sulfate bromide phosphate
Single Charge Cations (know symbols and charges for these elements when they form ionic compounds)
Group 1 cations: H+, Li +, Na +, K+ Group 2 cations: Be 2+, Mg 2+, Ca 2+, Sr 2+, Ba 2+ Others: NH 4 +, Ag +, Ni 2+, Zn2+, Al 3+
Multiple Charge Cations The common charges are in brackets, know symbol for each element, and that these elements (and others) have multiple common charges in ionic compounds. The actual charges don’t need to be memorized.
Iron (II, III) Gold (I and III) Copper (I and II) Tin (II and IV) Chromium (II, III and VI) Titanium (II and IV) Manganese (II, III, IV, VI, VII) Uranium (III−VI) Cobalt (II and III) Plutonium (III−VI) Lead (II and IV) Mercury (II) [mercury (I) is Hg 2 2+]
Noble gases: Helium through Xenon, just their names and symbols, they don’t make ionic compounds.
PRACTICE PROBLEMS From Chapter 2:
Work problems 51−58 and 61−74 in chapter 2 for practice in naming compounds (not collected).
Do them until your eyeballs start to bleed, then do some more. Answers to the even problems will be posted along with the answer key to HW3 in the future.
