Pharmacology is one of the oldest sciences which deals with the study of drugs and their actions on living organisms. In
this unit you will learn the sources used to manufacture drugs; actions and effects of drugs on the body; standards which
ensure drug quality; process used to name drugs; and drug legislation which protects the consumer and the patient.
OBJECTIVES:
1. Define the terms in this unit.
2. Identify sources of drugs.
3. Describe the various drug actions.
4. Describe drug effects.
5. Explain drug standardization.
6. State the difference between the official, chemical, generic and trade name of a drug.
7. State the current names and year of enactment of the laws that govern the dispensing of medications and
controlled substances.
8. Discuss the five (5) schedules of the controlled Substance Act.
9. Demonstrate proper use of drug reference books.
10. State the Licensed Practical Nurse’s responsibilities in relation to drug therapy.
