COURSE: CHEMISTRY 102: General Chemistry II
DESCRIPTION: Continues discussion of topics introduced in Chemistry 101: Introduction to
Organic Chemistry, halogenated hydrocarbons, alcohols, phenols and ethers, aldehydes and
ketones, organic acids and derivatives, amines and derivatives, compounds of sulfur and
phosphorus, and polymers. Laboratory work will support lecture topics. Prerequisite:
Chemistry 101
RECOMMENDED TEXT: Frederick Bettelheim, William H. Brown and Jerry March.,
Introduction to General, Organic, and Biochemistry, 5th edition, 2004. Brooks Cole Publishing.

FORMAT: The challenge exam consists of forty multiple-choice questions and three essay
questions. Student will be supplied with a periodic table, but must bring a calculator to complete
the exam. Multiple choice questions are worth 2 points each. First essay is worth 6 points,
remaining 2 essays are worth 7 points each.
GRADING: Students must receive a “C” (73-76) in order to receive credit for a course taken as
a Challenge Exam.
