Lexi Keller Oktober 9 2022 Intro to Chicanos CRP # During a time of uprising the Chicanas were able to form a movement of their own. The article “Beyond Indifference and Antipathy: The Chicana Movement and Chicana Feminist Discourse” written by two women Denise A Segura and Beatriz M. Pesquera addresses issues with in the movement. While the Chicano and Women’s Rights movement were addressing what seemed to be common ground, there was still a missing piece for Mexican American Women. The Women’s movement divided into two groups the ‘Liberation’ and “Rights” but left overlooked women of color (pg70). The Chicana movement was not so much focused on the divide between radical change and integration but rather the strengthening women all together. By stating that they were on a united front they focused on the fact that as Chicanos they were oppressed by Anglos and their movement was not a part of the Anglo Women’s movement who were part of the oppressors. This statement could stand alone to represent the entire movement as a whole. The female authors of this article did well to keep opinion out, however it can be seen what their preferences with the examples they use and their placement within the article. Their use of examples when dividing the women’s
movement made it clear how opposing the sides were at the time, as in the quote stating that it is a “bunch of Bull” that you could not be a feminist and a Chicana. The use of that quote aligns and shows that their stance as well, otherwise what would be the point of using that specific quote rather than paraphrasing. When discussing about the part of the Chicana movement that included family and reproductions they did not skim by it, but in fact used more powerful language to describe the Loyalists position, who had believed that “birth control and abortions threated la familia ” followed by words likes accused, failed and betrayal. Followed by the opposingly arguments described with the words demystify, justified, and others express that they are in agreement with Women’s choice in reproductive health. As you read further into the article the authors address the views that men with in the Chicano movement had towards their women counter parts. When describing how men challenged Chicanas the authors included quotes on “loyalty test” and “primary contradiction” this emphasizes their distaste to the matter. After the description they add a quote sharing that “Chicanas were seen more as a hindrance or decoration than as equal participants”. Overall, the article’s description of the Chicana movement and it’s different facets was completed in such a way that their position in the matter can be seen. The authors use of quotations, surveys, and descriptions
