CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Construction is a process of constructing a building or infrastructure. Building Construction is the process of adding structure to real property. Construction of buildings andinfrastructures plays an important role in the development of countries. Construction differs from manufacturing in which involves mass production of similar items without a designatedpurchaser, while construction it takes place on location for a known client. Construction starts with planning of building or infrastructure for construction, designof layout for construction and financing or costing require for construction. A small scale construction includes the construction of houses, residential apartments, buildings, etc. Largescale construction includes constructions of Residential projects, bridges, infrastructures, etc.Large scale construction requires collaboration of multiple disciplines, sometimes it referred as mega projects. Building constructions are made of public construction and private construction. Public construction includes the construction under government projects such as building of offices, construction of bridges, railways, highways, mega projects, etc. Private construction includes the construction of houses, apartments and complexes, private building projects, etc.

1.1 TYPES OF CONSTRUCTION:

  1. Residential construction projects
  2. Commercial construction projects
  3. Industrial construction projects
  4. Institutional construction projects
  5. Infrastructure construction projects
  6. Environmental projects Dept. of Civil Engineering, MSEC 1

Safety cone Provide a brief reminder to pedestrians or motorists to proceed with extra caution. Caution board (^) Provide gear warning to the operator in a hazardous situation that may cause minor or moderate injury.

1.3 CONSTRUCTION TOOLS:

Construction tools list for building construction works such as concrete, brick masonry, levelling, wood works, floor works, brick lying, plastering etc. is provided. Everyconstruction tool is necessary to achieve good results in the whole project. Along with thesetools, the workers should also use some safety tools to prevent them from the unexpected accidents. Measuring tape Measuring tape is used to check the thickness, length, widths of masonry walls, foundation beds, and excavated trench etc. Dept. of Civil Engineering, MSEC 4

INTERNSHIP REPORT 2022- Wheel Barrow Wheel barrow is used to transport bulk weights of materials like cement, sand, concrete mix etc. It contains one or two wheels at its front and two handles at its backwhich are used to push the wheel barrow. Spirit Level Spirit level is made of wood or hard plastic with bubble tube in the middle. Thebubble tube is filled with alcohol partially. So the air bubble is formed in it. Pick Axe Pick axe is used to excavate the soil. It is more suitable for hand soil which is quitedifficult to dig with spade or hoe.

CHAPTER-2 BLOCK WORK

2.1 MATERIALS:

  • Autoclaved Aerated Concrete is an eco-friendly and certified green building material which is lightweight, load-bearing, high-insulating, durable building blocks and 3 times lighter when compared to red bricks.
  • The main advantages of AAC Blocks are Eco-friendly and sustainable, Lightweight, Thermally insulated and energy efficient, Fire resistant and has Good acoustic properties. Dept. of Civil Engineering, MSEC 6

INTERNSHIP REPORT 2022-

  • AAC block adhesive is a polymer-based versatile jointing material specially designed to provide high bonding, durability and speed up the build process of AAC blocks, fly ash bricks, concrete blocks, etc
  • Adhesive is a pre-mixed, easy to apply high-quality mortar comprising of cement, graded sand and admixtures which replaces conventional jointing mortar of 12-18 mm thickness with highly versatile 3-5 mm thickness. Fig 2.1 AAC blocks Fig 2.1 Adhesive

2.2 METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION:

Three Methods of construction there areSurface preparationMixing of adhesiveApplication of Adhesive

SURFACE PREPARATION:

  • The surface of application must be properly cleaned for loose particles, dust, dirt, oil, and grease.
  • The base on which the adhesive is applied must be cured.
  • The surface defects such as cracks, holes or voids should be repaired prior to application.

MIXING OF ADHESIVE:

  • The mixing of adhesive must be done properly and thoroughly with water. Dept. of Civil Engineering, MSEC 7

INTERNSHIP REPORT 2022-

INTERNAL PLASTERING:

  • In the case of brick masonry/block work, the thickness of plaster is generally 12 mm, and in the case of concrete masonry/block work, this thickness varies from 9 to 15 mm.
  • The ratio of cement and sand for plaster varies from 1:3 to 1:6.
  • Engineers should closely monitor the mortar mix ratio on-site.
  • The only required amount of dry mortar (cement-sand mixture) is prepared.
  • The supervisor should ensure that water is mixed to dry mortar for the quantity of dry mortar used or consumed within 30 min.
  • Apply plaster between the spaces formed by the screeds on the wall surface, using the trowel.
  • Level the surface using flat wooden floats and straight wooden edges.
  • After leveling, let the plaster set before curing.

EXTERNAL PLASTERING:

  • All the joints and surfaces should be well cleaned with a wire brush and ensure that they are free from oil, grease, etc.
  • For fixing chicken mesh to all joints of block work/Masonry and R.C.C work, make a hole on the beam, wall and column with a drilling machine.
  • Choose the 24 gauges for external plaster and chicken mesh of 12 mm mesh. Cut the chicken mesh in a minimum of 20 cm to 23 cm width by a cutter.
  • Fix the chicken mesh on the joint of R.C.C and masonry/blockwork wall by plumbing nails on R.C.C member and wire nails on masonry/blockwork member. • The chicken mesh should be tight enough in both directions, vertical and horizontal.
  • To avoid buckling and loosening of chicken mesh, which may then come out of the plaster, the spacing of nails should be less than 9” (23 cm).
  • The external wall will align and fix level pegs on outer wall surfaces using the surveying instrument/center plumb bobs. Dept. of Civil Engineering, MSEC 9

INTERNSHIP REPORT 2022-

  • Fix line Dory (string) from top slab to bottom level for all corners of the walls, corners of windows, lines of elevation features, lines of R.C.C grill, and all straight lines in that portion.
  • After the leveling of walls is completed, the projected surface, which is out of plaster due to an uneven surface, will be cleared.
  • Plastering coat mortar filling (1:4 Cement and Sand) from 15mm up to 20 mm will be applied on surfaces.
  • A rough surface is used to finish the external wall plaster.
  • Groves are made in between the beam and column, and block work for outside to avoid cracks.
  • All the openings, such as windows and door openings, must be aligned for perpendicularity. Dimensions must be checked for a clear opening as per requirements to avoid gaps issued after installations. • Chajja provides coping to avoid water entering through walls.
  • For projected slabs, we provide groves to restrain water.
  • Let the plaster set before applying the primer.
  • Primer is applied to the wall to make sure wall plastering cement does not absorb the water from lapper (Wall Putty) and to protect the external wall from the weather.
  • Fix the chicken mesh on the joint of R.C.C and masonry/blockwork wall by plumbing nails on R.C.C member and wire nails on masonry/blockwork member. Dept. of Civil Engineering, MSEC 10
