Internship and Term Paper Considerations
Whether you write a term paper or an internship project paper, you should address the following
issues where appropriate:
¾ What are the goals of the organization?
¾ What services are provided in order to meet their goals?
¾ How is their bureaucracy organized?
¾ How many and what types of people form the organization?
¾ From what sources does the organization draw its budget?
¾ How does politics influence the functioning of the organization?
¾ With which other organizations must the organization work in order to effectively provide
services?
¾ How are members of the organization held accountable?
¾ How well do the managers handle their subordinates?
¾ How well does the organization provide services in terms of efficiency?
In order to address these questions in an internship setting, you should observe and ask questions
where appropriate (your observations and questions on the job are research). In order to address
these questions in a term paper, you will need to do library research. In order to address some of
the questions you will need to evaluate the selected organization by comparison to another
organization (real or ideal).
Paper Length: 3 pages for Internship, 8-10 pages for Term Paper (see syllabus for additional
guidelines on Term Paper). Use Times Roman 12 point font, 1 inch margins on all sides, and
double space your essay. Make sure that your paper is a comprehensive essay with an intro,
body and conclusion—not merely a paragraph-by-paragraph answer to the above questions.
Due: Friday, May 2, 2008.
