International communication (also referred to as global communication or transnational
communication) is the communication practice that occurs across international borders.
The need for international communication was due to the increasing effects and influences of
globalization. As a field of study, international communication is a branch of communication studies,
concerning with the scope of "government-to-government", "business-to-business", and "people-to-
people" interactions at a global level.
Currently, international communication is being taught at colleges across the United States. Due to the
increasingly globalized market, employees who possess the ability to effectively communicate across
cultures are in high demand. International communication "encompasses political, economic, social,
cultural and military concerns".
Demanding a New Communication Order
Since the cold war officially ended in 1990, the intense relations of super powers halted with the collapse
of the Soviet Union, and the emergence of the Third World countries, the unequally developed
communication order can no longer existed. The Third World called for ceasing their marginalized
communication status. Especially when international communications stepped into the information age,
'the convergence of telecommunication and computing and the ability to move all type of data - pictures,
words, sounds - via the Internet have revolutionized international information exchange
Dimensions of International Communication
In simple words, international communication is communication between more than two countries, which
could include diplomats, media, trading companies. Nations communicate across borders to enhance
national interests and foster cultural ties and economic interest. In the age of satellite invasion, delivery of
TV programming can be another reason which may be added, even advertising for multi-country
products.
Dimensions:
International communication played a part in the movement toward more democratic government & a
free market economy that swept the whole world. It has created a sort of structural imperialism where one
has become a central power & rest have become peripherals.
Political Dimension:
1. International Communication has increased pressure of democratization.
2. Politics is dominating part of media content across the world.
3. Helpful in disseminating & propagating political ideas & ideologies.
4. Increased Public diplomacy.
5. Decreased political homogeneity.
Economic Dimension:
1. Border less world helpful to economies across the globe.
2. Change in market rates depend on the International economy.
3. Media companies are converging at high rate.
4. Increase in Trade & exchange among various warring countries too.
5. Turned non-market things into products. E.g. culture.
Cultural Dimension:
1. Free flow of culture.
2. Growth of linguistic groups.
3. Change in the use of language.
4. More market oriented communication.
