EC207 Irish Economic History Please answer TWO questions.

  1. With respect to the first ten years of the Irish Free State, it has been noted that: “the aims of economic policy have never since been so clearly defined, nor its methods so exactly adapted to those aims, as in the first ten years of the State when priority was given to the encouragement of agriculture” (Meenan 1970). Discuss.
  2. What factors contributed to the change in economic policy post-1932, to a strategy of import substitution industrialisation (ISI). What are the economic limitations of import substitution as a strategy for long-term development?
  3. It has been argued that Ireland persisted far too long a period with the strategy of import-substitution. What, in your estimation, were the long-term consequences of the extended period of import-substitution that can be gleaned from the Irish experience?
  4. “The abandonment of import-substitution industrialisation in post-War Ireland was due to a combination of internal critique and major external developments particularly with respect to new developments in Europe.” Critically evaluate this assessment.
  5. The move to an export-led strategy of long-term economic development was well articulated in T.K. Whitaker’s Economic Development , and in particular his arguments in favour of attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) to complement indigenous industrial development. What were his principal arguments in favour of foreign direct investment?
