Kennedy Inaugural Speech Questions (Open-ended/analytical)
1. Why are so many of the words Kennedy uses abstract? How do words like freedom, poverty, devotion,
loyalty, sacrifice set the tone of the speech?
2. Does Kennedy use any figures of speech that might be considered cliché? Which metaphors are more
original? Is there a pattern to their use?
3. Do any words in the speech seem archaic (old-fashioned)? If so, what are they, and what is their effect?
4. The whole speech consists of 27 short paragraphs. Why do you think Kennedy uses short paragraphs?
(A re-listen to the speech may be in order to help you answer this. The link is on my webpage.)
5. Paragraph 3 features a 94-word sentence. What is the purpose of this paragraph? How does the length
of this sentence relate to its purpose? Also, why are most sentences short?
6. Paragraph 23 consists of two rhetorical questions. What purpose do they serve in the context of the
speech?
7. How does Kennedys many uses of parallelism support the purpose of his speech? (What is he doing
with this device?)
