Don't miss anything!
Use the phone by the entrance-door to dial 6911 in the event of an emergency Follow safety instructions attached to the paper-cutter. Do not rush around the studio (tripping over easels is a safety issue!) Stay familiar with the evacuation procedures announced early in the semester A FIRST-AID KIT is provided by the phone A flash-light is provided by the phone (use in the event of a power-failure) Never use spray-fixatives in the studio/classroom. Spray fixatives can only be used in the AAB 403 spray-booth with the fan “ON.” AT THE END OF EACH CLASS: EASELS Return “Masonite” boards to designated area on counter below window-wall. Move easels ONLY when brakes are “OFF” Easel racks wiped and easels parked in a consolidated and organized way at the “sink” end of the room. Return easels to the upright/vertical position Move easel racks to lowest position Check that easel brakes are in the “OFF” position on parked easels EQUIPMENT/SUPPLIES Unused newsprint and cardboard returned to stacks where you found them. Drawing boards stacked in two stacks for each size (Window wall) Binder clips back in the box provided near boards Small “easel-shelves” returned to box near boards and binder-clips. Place items left in studio in “Lost and Found” area CLEAN-UP Wipe feet on mats as you leave the studio Any charcoal pieces on the floor must be picked up or swept up (so it isn’t tracked out into the halls) Clear counters of abandoned drawings, class materials, and waste papers FURNITURE/COUNTERS Bottles and cans emptied and put in white recycle bin (NO TRASH IN THIS BIN.) Stools, horses, and chairs placed under counters. Still-life carts consolidated in one area Yellow Light-stands: turn off lights when not in use and return to area at left and right of critique-boards FOR YOUR USE The following supplies are provided in bookcase next to entrance: paper-clips, rubber-bands, used erasers, rulers, extra pencils, scissors, tapes, staplers, 3-hole punch, cardboard-straightedges, single- edge razor-blades Newsprint is provided only for emergency use by students. You are required to supply your own newsprint of the appropriate size for your drawing class. Cardboard sheets found on back counter can be used as padding beneath your paper when you draw on masonite boards STUDIO HOURS AAB 402 is open weekdays from about 8:00 am to whenever the last faculty member leaves in the evening. Check the schedule outside the door for class-meeting times. To work during a class for which you are not registered: arrive before the class begins and request permission of the professor. Do nothing to disturb the class in session. Students registered for that class have priority for space and easels.
The Art Club meets in AAB 402 from 11:00 to 1:00 on Wednesdays. You are welcome to join them or you may work in the studio (quietly) while the Art Club meeting is in session. STILL-LIFE SET-UPS Let your professor move the still-life carts whenever possible. If you must reposition a cart, do so VERY CAREFULLY to avoid disturbing the arrangement. NEVER, EVER MOVE ITEMS IN THE STILL-LIFE SET-UPS. Many drawing and painting students are working from the same still-life. When you move something it can upset many students who need the exact arrangement you work from. If something falls or changes positions when the cart is rolled, try to replace the item exactly where/how it was. Do not use tape to register still-life locations. Do a map/sketch of the relationship and distance of your easel from the still-life cart and the location of any light sources. You can also take a photo with your cell-phone to function as a reminder of your precise viewpoint. (Remember: Never draw from a cell-phone image or photo of anything! Always work from three-dimensional reality!) CONDUCT IN THE STUDIO All persons are to be treated and addressed with respect at all times. Conversations in the drawing studio are about drawing and the current course-work. Take all other conversations into the hallways during breaks. Speak quietly in the studio only when necessary, IN PARTICULAR WHEN MODELS ARE POSING. Limit comings and goings in the studio to necessity. Remain in the studio during discussions, critiques, demos, and lectures, and while life-drawing is in session. Follow your professor’s protocols and instructions for breaks. (10 minutes mid-class.) No listening devices are allowed during the class. Cell phones should NEVER be brought out while the model is posing. Keep them in your pocket or bag and set them to vibrate.Take emergency cell-phone conversations into the hallway, otherwise no cell-phone conversations are acceptable. When the model is posing: o The room is quiet. o Students are respectful and focused on drawing. o Prepare your drawing surface (ground) PRIOR to the beginning of the model-session. o Check that the studio door is closed and an appropriate visual barrier (cabinet door or easel) is in place to obstruct the view from the hallways. o No one touches the model for positioning at any time. Your instructor will verbally assist the model to return to a previous position. o The opportunity to draw from a model is a privilege for any artist and should always be treated as such. o Comments about the model (his/her age, ethnicity, body, gender, or any other quality) are absolutely unacceptable in the studio or on our campus. Such comments are an infringement upon their dignity and rights and are, thus, considered to be a verbal assault or abuse. Like any act of bias or harassment, such comments are a serious breach of the student code of conduct and will be dealt with according to those policies. Please see “Student Code of Conduct” in the WCC Student Handbook (http://www.sunywcc.edu/dep/pub_archive/index.htm) Disciplinary actions for such breaches may include: suspension, or dismissal/expulsion from school.
