TERM 5

DEFINITION 5 As a Colorado native I enjoy hiking and experiencing nature and its many wonders as much as any. I always observe strict fire policy, but have seen the consequences of those who havent. As you walked or drove to school I bet you all looked up at the beautiful San Francisco Peaks, I know I did. Nothing would crush the soul of this campus more than to see those peaks ablaze. This problem affects the world, nowhere is safe until we can learn to be responsible.

We can stop the hundreds of homes lost, the thousands of acres torched and the millions affected by those fires. I stand before you today, hoping to make a difference. Hell forget my proposed policy, at the very least this is thirty people who will hopefully be a little more vigilant next time they put out a fire, or a cigarette. I stand to try to make a change, to right a wrong and heres why its an issue. TERM 7

DEFINITION 7 A. There is costs to humanity that comes of forest fires. But maybe the largest toll of these forest fires is to their natural inhabitants, Animals. Take the Black Forest fire in Colorado, tragically two human lives were lost in the inferno. I am not attempting to lessen the severity of that loss, put merely bring forward that it is most likely that thousands animals were killed. Deer, rabbits, mountain lions and numerous other beasts were killed because of simple negligence. TERM 8

DEFINITION 8

1. According to a study done by the US forest service in 2002

forest fires can have a negative impact of the plant life for

years after the initial burn. a. Topsoil is vital in retaining

water and nutrients for plants and trees. If a fire is large

enough a layer of soil is lost and future growth is halted.

(Bormann, 2014)

done by National Geographic concluded that.

started from power tools, 10% from unattended

campfires, 5% from arson and 4% from trash burning.

TERM 10

In2007 a fallen power linenear San Diego set off a fire that

burned almost 200,000 acres and led to the death of two

people, later in 2009 sparks from a weed cutterare thought

to have led to an 8,700 acre fire in Santa Barbara
