EC393 Methodology of Economics Please answer TWO questions.

  1. Outline the contents of Nassau Senior’s fundamental postulates which he argued provided the foundations for the new science of political economy. Critically evaluate Senior’s approach to economic methodology.
  2. Write a critical account of John Stuart Mill’s depiction of the characteristics of political economy as a unique and separate discipline. Explain how he combined his commitment to empiricism with the deductivism of his methodological framework for political economy.
  3. Explain the distinction that John Elliot Cairnes drew between ‘hypothetical truth’ and ‘positive truth.’ What role does verification play as between these two domains of ‘truth’?
  4. Terence Hutchinson is credited with introducing some of the central tenets of logical positivism into economic methodology. Explain what implications this had for economic methodology when compared to Lionel Robbins’ subjectivism.
  5. Milton Friedman is argued to be the pivotal figure in articulating an instrumentalist interpretation of economic methodology. Critically evaluate Friedman’s instrumentalism as a model for the practice of economic methodology.
