SECTION A

  1. Give a brief account of the biological features of Porphyra (nori) that allow its sustainable utilisation.
  2. What factors currently constrain the development of the Irish seaweed industry? What research should be undertaken to allow a sustainable utilisation of algal resources in the future? Support our answer with some examples.
  3. What are carrageenans, where do they come from and what are their industrial uses?
  4. Give a brief account of the potential utilisation of microalgae, outlining sources, species, techniques, applications and products. SECTION B
  5. What is the predation hypothesis? What are the ways in which predation can affect community structure? (Please give examples)
  6. What are molecular markers? For THREE of the following markers describe the approach and give examples of case studies where they have been used; RFLP, Allozymes, RAPDs, microsatellites, DNA sequencing.
  7. "A major objective of genetic management is to minimize inbreeding and loss of genetic diversity". Discuss.
  8. In the context of fish population studies, (a) describe the differences between true growth rates and population growth rates; (b) outline a standard protocol for sampling a fish population; (c) comment on length-weight relationships and the derivation and use of condition indices (all three sections of the question carry equal marks).
