Director’s Notes How to Succeed in Business WithoutReally Trying^ grew

out^ of^ Shepherd

Mead’s satirical look at “corporate Amer-ica” c. 1952. And, as is the case with allgood satire, his humorous send-up con-tains a great deal of truth. Satire, by itsvery nature, ridicules its subject in thehopes of ultimately affecting change. “Aspoon full of sugar makes the medicinego down,” right? So, has corporate Amer-ica^ changed^ significantly

since^ Mead’s

book and the subsequent popularity ofthe Broadway production of 1961? “Yes”and “no.” But what is undeniably true isthat^ the^ musical

adaptation^ certainly

struck the critics’ collective funny-bone,as the team of Abe Burrows, Jack Wein-stock, Willie Gilbert and lyricist FrankLoesser picked up the Pulitzer Prize forDrama,^ 1961-62.

How to Succeed…

is

only the fourth of six musicals ever to doso in Broadway history! So what appealed to me about this show? For one thing, the book and lyrics arescathingly funny and so brilliantly con-ceived all I had to do was to let them bemy guide. That being said, our produc-tion is definitely indebted to the 1995revival directed by Des McAnuff. A fewchanges^ have^ occurred

in^ corporate

America since 1962, and the McAnuffproduction^ certainly

stimulated^ my

thoughts on what the show might haveto^ say^ to^ a^ contemporary

audience.

What I soon discovered is the “old say-

ing” is true, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” You don’thave to look too far to find corporatecultures in America today that reflectmuch of the silliness lampooned in thepiece.^ Enron,^ WorldCom…pick

your

target. But what ultimately appeals to me themost about this show is it’s ability topoint out human and corporate foiblesin a way that makes us laugh, while driv-ing home its more substantive points ofsexism, cronyism, favoritism and nepo-tism^ (among^ several

others).^ Young

Finch learns that the price of success canbe^ steep,^ that^ the

Machiavellian^ ap-

proach to climbing the corporate laddercan come back to bite you. Additionally, when Finch is facing his darkest hour—itis his coming clean, his telling the truth--that^ saves^ him^ from

certain^ dispatch.

There’s a wonderful lesson at the end ofthe play as Finch lowers his guard, and ina moment of true humility, takes respon-sibility for his actions…and is rewardedfor it. Nobody is more surprised than he.Finally, the willingness of the woman heloves to stand by him through thick andthin, even when things get rough, giveshim the courage to follow through anddo the right thing. Anyone who has everworked in any type of a corporate envi-ronment should have a good laugh asthey recognize the common challengesand personalities they deal with daily. And, lest we forget the point of all that’sbeing satirized here, as long as lust, love, greed, corruption, ego and ambition area part of the corporate scene, this showwill always be relevant.
