Evidence Based Practice and Teaching Point on Cutaneous Abscess According to Cleveland Clinic, an abscess is a buildup of pus caused by bacterial infection leading to redness, swelling, fever, fatigue, pain, and pus pocket (Cleveland Clinic, 2022). Abscess can be diagnosed by a general physical examination and possible wound culture may be needed (Cleveland Clinic, 2022). Deeper abscesses may need ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI to be diagnosed (Cleveland Clinic, 2022). Some smaller abscesses can resolve on their own by applying warm compresses, other more complicated abscesses may require in office drainage or surgical drainage (Cleveland Clinic, 2022). For internal abscesses needle aspiration may be needed, and a drain put in place to allow abscess to drain into bag (Cleveland Clinic, 2022). Abscesses can be prevented by washing hands often, not sharing towels, razors, toothbrushes, avoiding nicking while shaving, maintaining healthy diet, smoking cessation, and practicing good dental hygiene (Cleveland Clinic, 2022). Treatment for an abscess would be antibiotic therapy for minor abscess and hospitalization for IV therapy for more severe cases (Cleveland Clinic, 2022). Patients should contact provider immediately if they have fever, chills, or extreme swelling (Cleveland Clinic, 2022). PATIENT TEACHING POINTS :
