CS 4594 Broadband Networks and Communications HW Assignment #2
Due Dec 2
For this assignment develop a proposal for spending up to $150,000 for establishing a Broadband
Telecommunications/Networking Laboratory in the College of Science.
Work in groups of 1-2 people.
Your proposal should be based upon the following principles and constraints:
It should provide for broadband networking capabilities in the lab. This includes
oa SONET ring with multiple lines (at least three) and multiple sections within at least one line.
oa Frame Relay network with at least three end points.
oan ATM network with at least three ATM switches
othree MPLS domains, each with several LSR nodes
You may use equipment in multiple ways to create configurations that satisfy these specifications.
The cost should not exceed $150,000, including tax.
The cost should include a 42% educational discount over list price for new equipment.
The proposal should be well-written.
The solution must work.
The result must have educational benefit to future students of the broadband class, in particular, as well
as students taking other networking and telecommunications courses through the department.
The structure of your proposal should be as follows:
Introduction - one paragraph
Describe the context of the problem.
State the problem.
Summarize your solution in one sentence.
Details - one to three pages, to include:
Block diagram of the network configuration.
Description of the system as a whole and its relation to existing equipment.
Description (with costs) of the network boxes
- overall and in detail, component by component
Table of parts by part number and cost
Educational Plan - less than a page
Describe how this equipment could be used in a lab exercise for CS 4594.
Conclusion – half a page
Sum up the solution and discuss benefits and risks.
Appendices
Attach printout of web page of the proposed equipment.
- Include data sheet and picture if possible.
Attach a diagram of the routers
This assignment is based on an actual proposal that was approved for funding. The proposal was based on
enhancing some Cisco routers that had been donated. The plan was to add OC-3 modules. However, a network
systems integration engineer determined that determined that the original plan would not work. The problem
was that the proposed Cisco router series (2600, 3600, 7200) cannot operate in the ATM “cloud”, though they

CS 4594 Broadband Networks and Communications HW Assignment # can function within a Frame Relay “cloud”. Cisco sold an ATM switch (the Lightstream 1010) that can act as an ATM switch in the “cloud”. However, the Lightstream 1010 is now replaced by newer equipment, and other companies such an Juniper make competing equipment. You can use web resources such as: http://www.cisco.com and http://www.lordsnet.com for configuration and pricing information. You can even find pricing information on Ebay. You can find network design and simulation software at http://opnet.com. Your job is to participate in the process of developing a new plan that will satisfy the new requirements and have good educational benefit. 2
