Hakan Kaya Hist Response Paper # New World Ideologies: Kemalism, Fascism and Nazism There are important events in the history scene that affect the whole world. These events often affect the world in different ways, both before and after. First World War is one of the best examples of these events. After the First World War, significant changes occurred on both the winning side and the losing side of the war. There were major changes on both sides and these changes led to ideological transformations. These ideological changes were so shocking that when they combined with armed movements they ignited the wicket of the Second World War. If such ideological transformations that ignite the wick of the Second World War are examined, ideological transformations in Germany and Italy can be given as examples. Ideological transformation in Turkey, which does not affect the Second World War, though it is important to examine ideological conversions that occur after the First World War. The Fascist regime developed in Italy with the development of Fascist ideology, Nazism called Nazi ideology occurred in Germany and a regime was formed accordingly. In Turkey, Kemalism began in 1930, according to the Kemalist understanding of the country created a new order. In this paper, the common points and differences of Nazism, Fascism and Kemalism ideologies will be examined, and then Kemalist cultural revolution and its elements will be discussed. First of all, Liberalism, which was effective and on the rise until the First World War, lost its effect after the war, because the First World War, as stated at the beginning of the article, caused differences in all countries that, entered the War. Again, as mentioned, it caused great transformations especially for losers. One of the most important issues leading to these changes is nationalism. The wave of Nationalism that occurred in Europe after the Paris
Peace Conference increased the countries' feelings of national revenge. Immediately after these, the Great Depression period began. All these events have led to authoritarian regimes in Europe. Among the most important are the extreme right-wing movements that Nazism and Fascism. There was a great interest in these movements and people supported them in large masses. Especially when these ideologies came to power in the form of an army, harsh dictatorial administrations started. When these ideologies took over their country in the 1930s, their greatest desire was to create a new nation in line with their extreme-right views. Although the methods of these ideologies were different, all three were against democracy, and all three acted on the ultranationalist view. Along with these saw themselves as superior to all the nations. For this reason, they acted with an aggressive management approach. This aggression was reflected both in different nations living in their own country and in the countries within their borders. The pressures on Kurds and Jews are examples of the mentioned aggressions. These intolerable ideologies against differences were intended to create a single nation, of a uniform type and without differences. For this purpose, they created their own ideal sense of identity and culture. Afterwards, they tried to impose the understanding of identity and culture they created on people. Another common point was the importance given to the Leader. Loyalty to the Leader was very important for the execution of their dictatorial systems. In Turkey, Germany and Italy were very repressive regimes due to mentioned ideologies. There was no free press and political criticism in these countries. The criticism of the leader and the regime was not forgiven. There was no democratic demand, and the elections were showing off. Apart from all these common features, these ideologies had different aspects. Firstly, the importance given to the legal system can be mentioned. In a way, the Kemalists were more loyal to the law than the Nazis and Fascists. Although Turkey was important for the perception of the courts even if they respect the law as pro-regime behavior. The Independence Courts set up to judge people who oppose the regime can be
revolution linked to the letter revolution. In line with this movement, all words that evoke Islamic or Ottoman connotations were tried to be changed. This is a great movement that damages the intellectual Muslim Turkish accumulation. In addition, due to these revolutions, historical and literary ties with the past were broken and old books became unreadable. Another cultural revolution element to be mentioned is the attempt to eliminate Turkish alaturka music. With the banning of Turkish alaturka music education in universities and educational institutions, western classical music studies were emphasized. In addition to these innovations, wearing hats has become mandatory and many innovations have been made regarding the clothes. Finally, the old Islamic calendar used by the Ottoman was changed and the calendar used by the west began to be used. In conclusion, in this article, general features of Kemalism, Nazism and Fascism are tried to be explained. In addition, similarities and differences between these ideologies were explained. Furthermore, Kemalist cultural revolution and the changes made according to this revolution were mentioned. If we briefly touch on the narratives, it can be said that these ideologies are oppressive, they are nationalists, they have superior racial ideas, they have anti- democratic structures and they have dictatorial structures that are loyal to the leaders. It can be said that the studies on the Kemalist cultural revolution are aimed at eliminating the Islamic and Ottoman heritage in general. While doing these, emphasis was put on nationalism, modernization and westernization.
