Hill Reaction Postlab

  1. Graph your data as Absorbance vs Time. Be sure your graph includes all necessary parts: key, labeled axes, etc.
  2. Graph your data as Change in Absorbance vs Time. Be sure your graph includes all necessary parts: key, labeled axes, etc.
  1. Which of the two graphs you made is a better representation of the “rate of photosynthesis”? Explain why. Graph 2 is a better representation because it gives a more accurate ad descriptive name to the axis.
  2. Explain why Tube 1 is a negative control. 1 pts Test tube 1 is a negative control because it does not get any exposure to light and therefore is unchanged by outside variables.
  3. Explain why Tube 2 is a positive control. 1 pts Tube 2 is a positive control because we know exactly the change that we are looking for and see that change only. .
  4. The Hill Reaction inhibitor used, DCMU, is an herbicide. Hill Reaction inhibitors make good herbicides for obvious reasons and it may be tempting to think that animals would be unaffected by them since animals do not photosynthesize. Atrazine is another Hill Reaction inhibitor and is a widely used herbicide with approximately 85 pounds applied per square mile to farms in the American Midwest. It is one of the most common herbicide contaminants in drinking water. Do an internet search for the effects of atrazine on any animal (including humans). Write a 250 word summary addressing these questions: 4 pts · How are people typically exposed to atrazine? · What is known about atrazine’s stability in water vs land/dry? · What is an endocrine disruptor? What aspects of human physiology might be affected by endocrine disruptor exposure? · Include citations in your summary and a bibliography with links to your sources. People are typically exposed to atrazine by drinking contaminated water or even eating corn that is not properly washed. Atrazine that is found in water has a very long half-life and therefore it contaminates everything that the water touches for a long time, in addition, it is more stable in water. If we look atrazine when it is dry on land, the half life is much shorter, typically around 60 days. An endocrine disruptor is a chemical compound that disrupts the function of the endocrine system. If exposed to it for an extended period of time, a human's reproductive system may be altered.
  5. Watch this TEDx talk by Dr. Hayes. Write a 250 word reflection on his talk.
