Name Many of us wanted to
“hurry up” and
become an adult
when we were
young. What is it
that makes
adulthood so
desirable to young
people?
Now that you’ve
reached or almost
reached adulthood,
how is it what you
expected? What has
been unexpected?
1. Alford,Shania
I think the thought of
independence is what made
me want to be older. Or
freedom.
I enjoy my sense of freedom
but I don’t like how much
responsibility I have. And I
wasn’t expecting to have to
do so much on my own.
2. Benton,Aaron
The idea of not being told
what to do and being able to
do things that you were told
you can do when your older.
The feeling of independence I
have is great overall and I’m
proud of the insights I’ve
learned over the past years
but I am unsure if I am fully
prepared for being able to
sustain myself.
3. Butler,Kaylah
The independence part
definitely has a huge part in
it. When you're younger, you
see so many older individuals,
and it makes you think of all
the possibilities and of what
you could be. Making
adulthood desirable.
I actually enjoy being more
independent and having
more of I say i guess. But
there’s also a lot of stress and
negatives that come along
with it. But I’m getting more
life experiences and seeing
new things which I love
4. Chin,Mia
The desire to be on my own
as well as make my own
decisions especially in terms
of where and what I spend
my money on
I live 6 hours away and enjoy
the independence as well as
the responsibility but I didn’t
expect saving money to be
this difficult

  1. De Bruin,Quirine
  2. DiLauro,Sophia I think adulthood is desirable because your In charge of yourself. Tv and movie portrays all these fun things you can do when your older, but you have to be able to pay for it all in the the first place I think it’s both a lot of it I expected but there’s also a lot your learn as you go. Living on your own shoes yqqqqqqqq
  3. Dristi,Naimah I think the reason it was desirable is because our parents may have said “you can do it when your older” The media or tv shows we watched may have influenced it. Growing up in a south Asian Muslim household my reality isn’t so different from before because I still live with my parents. However I do say you get more freedom and independence
  4. Edmond,Chris The reason that adulthood seems so desirable would be that you want to have that independence and want all the cool gadgets that adults or older siblings have like cars, or phones, or maybe even your own room. It’s personally not exactly what I thought it’d be but it isn’t that far off.
  5. Holeman,Von I think that adulthood is desirable to us because of that idea that we get the freedom to do whatever we want without having to hear from our parents. I think that i ain't expect it to be this challenging in certain areas i also hate spending all my money on bills
  6. Jarrell,Will You gain knowledge, get smarter. And you get bigger and become more skilled at tasks. I don’t know if I had much expectation beyond being smarter and more skilled. Lots of what you learn isn’t as interesting as it was when you were a child.

responsibilities and commitments.

  1. Smith Brooks,Korey
  2. Warren Jr.,Robbie I feel like the thought of having some independence and freedom is what really drove us to think like that. I did not really expect much, but from what I did expect, it is not really that bad so far.
  3. Wesley,Alicia
  4. Whitney,Chamara
  5. Womack,Zanyah (Nyah) The concept of “authority”, having that sense of independence Being older there isn’t really a thrill, more responsibility, committing different aspects in life
  6. Zevada,Victoria

I think that what makes

adulthood desirable to

young people is being able

to be independent, and not

having to ask for parents

permission/approval for

everything.

now that I’ve reached adulthood, and gained the independence I seeked, I wish I could go back. Having to do everything for myself and having to pay for what I want/need is not as fun as I expected.

  1. Mr. Sturm Freedom, less individuals to answer to More freedom, but you end up answering to commitments, rules, work, etc.
