CITA 310 Lab
Lab 1 Hard Drive setup:
In this lab you will configure two hard drives for use during the semester. These hard drives will be configured
to boot Windows Server 2008, and Fedora Core 10. This will allow us to install, configure, and test in multiple
Web Server environments.
Remember: Document, Document, and Document!
Part I: Planning:
1. With the instructor and the rest of the class, discuss the issues you will face when configuring your
system for use during the remainder of the semester. Discussion should include (but not be limited to):
a. Setup and use of the Administrator ID.
b. Setup and use of other user IDs.
c. Strong passwords.
d. Partitioning issues.
e. Drive size requirements.
f. Potential Hardware issues.
Part II: Wiping the drive clean:
2. Use the tool of your choice to remove all partitions from the hard drive.
Part III: Installing Server 2008:
3. Install Server 2008.
a. Format the partition using “NTFS full.”
b. Reboot and confirm that you can log into the Operating System
c. Make any additional changes agreed to during the planning session.
Part IV: Installing the Fedora Core 10:
4. Install Linux using the settings agreed to during planning.
5. When given the option, choose automatic partitioning. IMPORTANT: Include the option to check the
partition information before actually partitioning. Review and record the partitions the system is
planning to create.
a. IMPORTANT: Do NOT partition the drive for Linux at this time.
6. Back out of the automatic partitioning dialog. After class discussion, record the planned partitioning for
Linux. Continue with manual partitioning of the drive for Linux as agreed.
a. IMPORTANT: Make sure to record the changed partition and drive assignment information in
detail!
7. Complete the setup of Linux.
a. Document your choices for the boot manager.
b. Complete all reboots and continue until you’ve setup at least one (non-administrator) user.
