Graphing Absolute Value Equations: Understanding Shape and Position, Lecture notes of Pre-Calculus

Instructions on graphing absolute value equations, explaining how the values of 'a', 'h', and 'k' affect the shape, direction, and position of the graph. Students are encouraged to describe the graph, graph it on paper, and use a calculator to plot the equation.

What you will learn

  • What is the role of 'h' and 'k' in shifting the vertex of an absolute value equation graph?
  • How does the value of 'a' affect the shape and direction of an absolute value equation graph?
  • How can you graph an absolute value equation using graph paper and a calculator?

Graphing Absolute Value Equations
Graph This is the basic shape for an absolute value equation.
(Remember, to find absolute value choose MATH, then NUM.)
Now graph these equations (you can do them all on the same screen if you like -
but make sure you can tell which is which!):
You should see that changing the values in different parts of the equation has
different effects on the shape and position of the graph.

Graphing Absolute Value Equations

Graph This is the basic shape for an absolute value equation. (Remember, to find absolute value choose MATH, then NUM.) Now graph these equations (you can do them all on the same screen if you like - but make sure you can tell which is which!): You should see that changing the values in different parts of the equation has different effects on the shape and position of the graph.

The basic formula for an absolute value equation is a tells the shape and direction of the graph if a is positive, the graph opens up if a is negative, the graph opens down if =1, the graph is of “average” width - the sides have slopes of 1 and - if <1, the graph is wider if >1, the graph is more narrow the sides of the graph have slopes of a and -a h and k shift the vertex of the graph (the point where the two angled sides meet) h shifts the graph from side to side k shifts the graph up and down
