A 2-week long assignment for 2nd year architecture students at southern polytechnic state university. The objective is to expand and transform the diagrams and elements of a fold model into a three-dimensional construction, exploring spatial qualities created by such a translation for human use. Students are required to create an identifiable entry, design a path system, and create two primary spaces for a small public assembly and private gathering, while focusing on connectivity, hierarchy of space, human scale, and investigation of spatial qualities.

ASSIGNMENT # 2.2: Fold Expanded: Formation of Architectural Spaces: Entry- Path-Space Duration: 2 Weeks
This assignment is an extension of previous exercise 2.1, The Fold. The intention of this project is to expand and transform the diagrams and elements of fold (previously constructed model) into a three-dimensional construction. The theme is to explore spatial qualities created by such a translation for human use.
Using the formation-strategy and conditions of your fold model/s, expand the composition in a 40’ x 120’ x 40’(height) site to create a 3D space composition highlighting following three elements:
Expand your strategy of fold to create both extrovert and introvert spaces. Introduce a linear pathway to link spaces and the entryway. The folding of the surface should create spaces for movement and spaces for activities. New elements of folds can be incorporated to highlight the framework of created spaces. All above elements must overlap/intersect each other both in plan and in 3D. The 40’ x 120’ site should actively be integrated with the 3D spatial composition. This means the site may have contours and level changes to complement creation of spatial qualities.
OBJECTIVE:
ENTRY: Create an identifiable entry through physical or implied elements of fold. This entry can be viewed as a transitional element to highlight other spaces.
PATH: Design a path system that may cut through expanded segments of fold, creating an experience of passing from outside to inside or inside to outside. The path should facilitate the access to the third element ‘space.’ This Path can be straight, curved, and/or combination of both. The path can be a ramp, set of steps, and/or a combination of both. The quality of linearity in fold should be evident in the designed path system. This site may play an interactive role to shape this path.

Design two spaces that become the primary focus of the total 3D composition. The designed spaces may be open, enclosed, semi-enclosed and a combination of all. The path may pass through this space, touch this space, or terminate at this space. For clarity use derivatives of basic forms (both 2D and 3D) for the formation of these spaces. You will be creating two spaces between 400 to 900 square feet, one for a small public assembly (extrovert) and one for a private gathering. The sense of space definition for human activites and use must be evident.
Students should focus on:
Models, plans, sections, elevations, axonometrics, and perspectives of interior and exterior. Show human figures (on path and space) to illustrate scale and proportion of a created space composition. Students should be able to articulate findings in terms of: spatial qualities, spatial relationship, opportunities and constraints in translating from diagrams to 3 D model, and tactile qualities.
Draw final design in necessary drawings using a scale of 1/8” = 1’-0”. Except the base, a single material should be used for formation of entry, path and space/ place.
