Preparing Vector Images

Keep vector images as stripped down as possible. Do not include any raster images within a vector image. Do not include gradients. e Illustrator .ai format is the best to use. Do not use .eps files. Save Illustrator files as version 10. 2

Naming Symbols

It is important to follow proper naming guidelines! No spaces No special characters No slashes Begin with a lowercase letter No dots Use a descriptive name. 4

Types of Symbols

Graphic Symbols whose content remains static. Includes symbols created with Flash tools, including text. Button is provides for a roll-over button for interactively in a Flash Movie. e button can be used to link to a Web page, jump to another movie, or another frame in the current movie. Movie Clip ey are mini Flash movies and play independently. Movie Clips can be very complicated. We will not use. 5

Bitmaps

Bitmaps are raster images containing pixels with their own values. e raster format is great for photographs. Do image editing in Photoshop, before importing to Flash. Set the size of the image with 72 ppi. Raster images can be “broken apart” for shape tweening. Always save your image in an uncompressed file format. Several raster file formats may be used. e Photoshop Document (PSD) format is recommended. Do not worry about large file sizes, Flash will apply JPEG compression on importing, and when publishing to swf. 7

Using Bitmapped Files

To import bitmap images, normally use: File > Import > Import to Library > select the file > Import Flash Compression Flash compresses all images to make the file size smaller and to decrease download time. e swf file is downloaded as one file, all the graphics together. e compression amount of raster images is set in the Publish Settings. JPEG Quality can be set from a low of 0 to a high of

Sound Compression Formats

Compression format can be selected in Publish Settings. ADPCM, Adaptive Differential Pulse-Code Modulation Primarily used for voice technologies. Old technology, not recommended. MP3, Moving Picture Experts Group, audio layer 3 e best, always use MP3. Not compatible with Flash Player versions 1 -3. RAW, no compression, huge files Speech Uses a compression method designed just for voice. 10

Flash Import Formats

MP3, Preferred WAV AIFF QuickTime Sun AU Audio files (CDs), must be converted to one of the above formats. 11

Sync Options

Event begins to play the sound when the playhead reaches the frame that holds the sound. Sound will continue to play independently. If another sound starts they will overlap. Start is similar to Event, except that it will not start until the current sound is finished. Sounds will not overlap. Stop, stops the indicated sound. Stream forces a movie to keep pace with the sound. Frames will be dropped to keep pace. It stops when the timeline stops or when another keyframe is encountered in the same layer. It is also streaming. 13

MP3 Bit Rate Quality

8 kbps, Very bad 16 kbps, Barely acceptable 20-32 kbps, Acceptable for voice 48-56 kbps, Acceptable for music files 64 kbps, Good 112-129, Excellent, near CD quality 160 kbps, Best Sound Professor Marchant recommends 64 kbps to keep file size manageable. 14

Shape Tweening

Shape to Shape e simplest is to draw two images in Flash and then morph between them. Text to Text Text can be morphed into other text. Shape to Text Shapes can be morphed into text or text into shapes. Reversing A nice effect is to create a shape tween and then reverse back to the original image. 16

How To Shape Tween

Place a shape in a keyframe. Insert a keyframe to the right of the first. Delete the 1st shape and add a second. Click in a frame between the keyframes and select Shape in the Tween option in the Properties panel. 17
